I thought the CRT chaps themselves had suggested you drain a pound? Yesterday's CRT bod suggested it, today's CRT was different and he obviously had a different opinion on this. He said to my son that we shouldn't have drained the pound and my boy just said "Well, my Dad is the skipper and it was his decision so you'd better tell him, not me". He didn't say anything to me,had he done so he would have received a two word answer, the first word of which rhymes with "duck". But anyway, we're moving again, and at Slattock . We're hoping to get to Todmorden by Sunday mid-day and then unfortunately Sam has to go home so I'll be single handing again. We had a really nice moment today, a yummy mummy and her two children were gongoozling at a lock so we chatted with them, then asked them if they wanted to come aboard for a ride to the next lock, in the event they enjoyed it so much that they came through the lock and up to the next one, where we moored up, and we gave them the dime tour of the living quarters. Yummy mummy said "That has really made my kids' day!"

Hope you're out of the badlands when your lad leaves.
That is, unless you've smuggled yummy mummy on board he he.
A mate was moored in Warwickshire and met a group of Spanish gongoozlers. He invited them on board for a quick tour, in at the front, through, and out at the back.
That evening he discovered his wallet, watch, and a camera were missing.
He can laugh about it now.....just!

That's a shame, we've shown a few interested people around the boat, and never had a problem, most recently some Russians who noticed I was wearing a Russian army schapka while going through the stop lock at Sutton Stop and got chatting, they thought the boat was lovely but were even more impressed that I could show them around it speaking in fluent Russian, I lived in Moscow for a while in the 1990s.

I learned Russian at an early age but can't remember half of it as I've never used it. My sister's scout group organised for a load of kids that has escaped Chernobyl to cone to England and we had two stay with us for two weeks. We picked it up quite quickly although their English was good. They had loads of days out and we took them to many places. We stayed on contact for years writing letters. We've lost all contact now, I suppose I should try and find them.

I'm impressed that you have retained fluency after that long ....... I got to reasonable conversation levels in Spanish in the 70's but last year I discovered that it was virtually all gone, ..... My Russian never got beyond Yes, no, thank you, one beer please .......( oh and shit of a dog and red arrsed chimpanzee ) and strangely all of that that I remember and the reason for the pirate spelling of arrsed is because the site wont let me spell it normally ........ it changes it to buttd ....... oh well

You'll make it to tod from slattocks if you get a wriggle on. I thought you might well get to slattocks yesterday. I'd try to get to the pound at the east (north) end of summit pound, though there is a nice mooring at the western end. Then early start will get you to Todmorden for dinner ish.

Saturday 0735 UK-time
Had a quick look nationalrail.co.uk for Sunday (tomorrow). Cheapest train fares.
£54 Todmorden to London £53.50 Hebden Bridge to London
£2.90 Hebden Bridge to Halifax £3.80 Todmorden to Halifax
£39.20 Halifax to London £52.00 Leeds to London £106.80 Huddersfield to London
There may be cheaper options if you split the journey eg. Huddersfield to Newark, Newark to London - but this takes a little time to explore (but a lot quicker on a table top computer than with mobile phone). Give us a shout if I can look stuff up for you (booking I would also offer but often the original credit card is required at the machine/station when collecting tickets).
Basically the railway from Todmorden goes to Sowerby Bridge where it forks, left fork to Halifax (next station), right fork to Brighouse (next station). From Halifax the line goes to Brighouse (next station if taking the left fork) and continues in direction of London if taking the left fork at Brighouse (the right fork takes you to Huddersfield). The trains that run Halifax to London direct are 'Grand Central' company. I mention Leeds as trains run from Hebden Bridge to Leeds (either via Brighouse or via Halifax) and as Leeds-London is a major route, there might have been cheap tickets from there. Sadly tomorrow is 'already here' so seems like no 'advance tickets' going cheaply. Prices above, are, of course, for one adult with no rail pass.

However, there is this:
Todmorden to London Kings Cross via Halifax. Bus service to Halifax (presumably railway replacement bus): Tod dep 1510 - Halifax arr 1550, then train 1613 dep Halifax - 1845 arr Kings Cross - price £42.10

I've already got him a ticket, Leeds to Westgate-on-Sea, it was £56, then it will be £6.10 from Todmorden to Leeds, we didn't book the ticket from Tod because we didn't know how far we were going to get, but the railway shadows the canal for its whole length so he could go from wherever we got to. We would have got further were it nor for our woes in Manchester, but it's still been a huge help having him along.

Just got back from Stafford, checked out the canal from nearby access roads, came across Desiree half way up the Littleborough flight. Had a quick chat, but got a family party at teatime, brother over from Spain, so couldn't stop to help. They are on schedule for catching the train tomorrow.

Latest news is that we are on the VM at lock 36 so we've just started dropping down towards Tod. As JimRiley said, we met up today and had a chat, and I obtained some local info, Jim also pointed out a piece of wood in the cut which would be perfect as a hand spike for the C&H... that's the second Thunderboater I've met on this trip.
Day off in Tod I think.

Morrisons Todmorden opening hours Sundays 1000-1600
We thought Todmorden is an OK sort of town. My dad's cousin was minister of the United Reformed Church there (up Honey Hole Road).
You could always jump on a train and go to Hebden Bridge & back to reconnoitre the canal, the railway crosses it just before Hebden Bridge. Fox & Goose pub at Hebden Bridge. Worth walking up the steep hill to Heptonstall, good view of HB from that road.
