It does have to be said that the boat was never cilled, the pound was drained. There are even photos to prove it

Did you cill the boat? I thought you simply drained a short pound rather than using the cill. No, they are mistaken here, the engineer spoke about cilling the boat and putting down a ladder as one of the possibilities, in the end I decided to drain the short pound. The point is that I'm not a boat engineer and he is, so there's obviously a problem if I could think up a better solution than he could.

Thats what I thought.
I guess crt can't authorise a drained lock or pound in case the boat sits down awkwardly on the bottom or tips over or ww2 ordnance, black holes etc. Its fair enough. Elfin safety that sort of thing.
The pickaxe man probably did a risk assessment and found it was impossible to comply. Was he wearing a personal flotation device (lifejacket) ?

No, but earlier on in the trip I did see some volunteers clearing litter from the towpath who were all wearing hi-viz vests and steel-toecapped safety boots, presumably in case a narrowboat jumped out of the cut and squashed their toes because the steerer didn't see them.

They were probably day release convicts... 😂

Anyway, so what if a short pound was drained - it looked like it was almost empty to start with!! Sensible solution. Also, the Witch was laughing - dive into what??!! 2 inches of sludge? (yes, yes, I know - tow the boat into deeper water...)
Another reminder that this stretch of canal needs attention. Such an important link, a shame to see it so neglected.

I don't think you can really expect RCR to drain a pound or cill a boat to fix the problem, that is the sort of thing you try yourself and hope nobody sees you doing it. I would have expected a tow to a dry dock though, or at least some help with the bow hauling.
My only experience with them, a friend of mine called them to attend an engine that wouldn't start. They came and got it started okay, and then before he left said "its running fine now, but it won't go into gear." When I asked if he had any plan to rectify that, he said no, he was only here to get the engine running... He then left. I started it up and put it in gear, it worked fine. Fuck knows what he was on about.

I imagine some of the skills are transferable.

I would suggest one of two things.
Either CRT sort this section of canal out, or they arrange for it to be infilled and have apartments built on it for the homeless. As it is, it just isn't worth having as a navigation, and presumably that's why we've only seen three moving boats and two moored boats between Manchester and Walsden.

Wigan awaits. I've just discovered this site which I have to explore: www.wiganworld.co.uk"This is an open letter to the People that run this site. For weeks you have sat by, for some reason, whilst the poster named a Jarvo has sat and tormented people by writing pure drivel. He has deliberately incited good posters and when they reply he has pressed the report button and as a consequence they have been banned. However his latest comment on the Child abuse thread is a step too far. It is time that you the Management did what your titles imply and started to manage the site. The first step should be to contact him and tell him that his anti-social comments will no longer be tolerated. If it was up to me he would never post on WW again. However that is your decision. I am fully aware that my posting could lead to my exclusion but that is a risk I am prepared to take to rid the site of this lunatic." Looks like a barrel of laughs.
