Today I phoned (lets call him a canaline 42 engine installer) and asked for his help in working out compatible (oem) fuel, oil and air filters for our engine - he went off on one and had a right old go at me - asking me why he should be telling me how to prevent him paying his mortgage etc...
I tried to explain that I would rather change them more often (using cheaper oem parts) than the scheduled 200 hours... he was having none of it - lecturing me about the non manufacturer ones containing 30% less filtering properties etc etc.
In the end I gave up TRYING to be nice to him and hung up - twat.
NOW ok - HAD I realised who I was phoning I may not of bothered but really - its not like I've done him out of any business ... more so, he HAS because there is no way on earth I'll buy anything from him now. *see previous comment*... grrrr.
I don't suppose anyone already knows what I can use rather than the "proper" ones do they?

I'd have been less polite -paying his mortgage through over priced filters? Hmmm, how about not ripping people off for overinflated parts for a start 👮👍💩

I'd say there possibly is a difference in the specification between different manufacturers, on my boat the oil filter is a paper element and there are visible differences in the construction between different makes. Unless the filters are extortionately expensive I'd stick with manufacturer's parts, at least until your engine is out of warranty because using non-manufacturer parts can void this.

he DID go on about using oem parts voiding warranties but I feel sure I could "keep" the old ones in a bag and in the event of something going wrong, swap them back on.

Umm, bollocks 😋 I know someone who had a new Nanni Kubota engine which dropped a valve. Seriously bad damage. I believe he received a replacement engine on warranty but I would not be surprised if the manufacturer/mariniser could void the warranty if he had not used the "correct" filter. Obviously it was a manufacturing fault and not due to which filter is used but warranty small print can be devious !.

There is no way you will have a failure that could be attributed to a quality aftermarket filter. As you say, There is no way your canaline Muppet could know what filter was fitted in the vanishingly small chance of it having a lubrication related failure. An oil filter takes up very little space on a shelf or in a box of spares - used or new.

he went off on one and had a right old go at me - asking me why he should be telling me how to prevent him paying his mortgage etc... Why exactly did you phone to this man, and what's his DEBT (mortgage is a debt) got to do with you? Can you recall more details of the conversation? Come on, spill the beans!! Filters. T W Marine explained in length why we should use Bukh engine oil filters for our Bukh engine. There may be specifications for the oil pressure for when the release valve opens, there's a valve to stop the flow back, and so on. When I asked where the filters are made we looked and they say Made in Tunisia. Bukh is a Danish engine, why aren't they making their own filters in Denmark? I wonder if Tunisians really put their enthusiasm into making these filters... cheap labour, obviously. I had bought an Austrian Mahle filter and T W said we could use it as an 'emergency' filter. There's a video on YouTube about filters - some are better than others. I'd go with Snotty Glob's comment and use the ones recommended by the manufacturer. Also use a decent oil. Why ruin an engine that costs thousands by saving pennies on oil? I change our engine oil as often as I can, perhaps every second day whilst on the move. Black out, golden in. Let's see if I can find that video...

Seems similar to the story with tyres but I suppose oil filters don't have the same sort if safety requirements as tyres
