Not according to T W marine, the guys who renovated our engine. I disagree, I've fitted thousands of filters to hundreds of engines and have NEVER used an genuine part. Aftermarket OEM is fine If you change your every few days there won't be any crap to filter out anyway! The cinic in me says the guy selling filters at vastly inflatory prices would say the quality of non OE sucks, he'd be daft not to. Back in the real world where the rest of us reside plant maintenance does not really on better than 4 fold increase in parts - particularly if they are in a different box. Mann, Baldwin and Bosch are quality parts, never had a problem with Fram either. Do not buy Indian Crossland oil filters from Euro Car Parts, they are trading on a once well respected name.

Well, it certainly isn't bollocks that BMC 1.5 oil filters vary in construction between different manufacturers and I'll quite happily post photos of old and new next time I do an oil change. I'm gonna play the smart arse card. The day I take advice from a truck driver over oil filters I'll hang my overalls up. You should ditch your element filter and fit a spin on one anyway 😋 Next time you are buying an oil filter give us a yell, we may be able to point you in the direction of a suitable one 👍

I would tell all your friends too.
If the bloke had just spent five minutes having a nice chat.
When you get an issue with the engine he could of been the first person you called, on the basis of the good info he gave you.
Using oem parts does not void car warranty so why should it in the marine industry. Infact there is European law preventing dealers from insisting all servicing was done by them

You really haven't thought this through, have you?

Well, Gazza has given his input and advice and I have given mine, and as with any forum it is now for Quaysider to decide which is wheat and which is chaff.

And why should I do that then? So you can be sure if getting a quality OEM replacement 👍 So all Crossland oil filters are paper element filters then?

So you can be sure if getting a quality OEM replacement 👍 So all Crossland oil filters are paper element filters then? Nope, you have an obsolete arrangement that has few applications that require obtaining OEM status. If you fit a spin on head you can use a filter that fits a vw group 20 valve petrol engine, more than a couple of those still about....

Honestly, I'd ignore Gazza's advice, he is generally considered to be the Thunderboat village idiot. You spend what, £3,000 a year mooring, licensing, insuring a boat which cost £80,000+ to build? How much are you hoping to save on a filter, a fiver?

I use the online company Gazza provided the link to. I checked out the manufacturer and asked advice and was told these were fine to use. We use our boat regularly and I change the oil and filters two or three times a year depending on hours and the engine uses no oil at all between changes.
