I hate chucking food away..but if we are not supposed to feed the ducks bread etc what are u supposed to do with food products we don't wanna eat??? Its all very well telling us not to giver xyz to wildlife but to keep chucking out when u know animals can eat it is not right. and before anyone passes smart arse comments i never buy excess but packaging isn't designed for one person families. I try just to buy what ill eat but gets very monotinous having to eat the same all the time to try and avoid waste...Im not a brilliant cook..hate cooking but hate waste even more rant over Isn't that what freezers were invented for? (sorry for the smart arsed comment but it is actually a serious suggestion)

My parents froze milk, but to me it never tasted the same after defrosting always seemed watery. Nowadays we go though milk like water anyway.

I'm the only person in our house that eats White bread and do exactly this. Divvy the loaf up into small batches and pull out as needed.

I hate people who say you can't give bread to ducks. then our temporary truce is well and truly over. processed food is not very good for humans - it's bloody awful for wildlife that depend on foraging when it's not convenient for you to go down to the local pond to feed them (which is usually in the winter or in bad weather when they need food the most). If you must then fed them with a suitable seed mix, like you would put on your bird table in the garden.

The problem with encouraging people to feed the ducks healthy foods is that most of these healthy duck foods don't float. This results in people scattering food on the banks for the ducks. Not too bad out in the countryside, but in a marina you just end up feeding more rats than ducks. I don't feed the bastards at all, I don't want to encourage them to hang around my boat. Noisy little fuckers.

And why can't we eat swans? why is it such a taboo?
My theory is that the royals figured out that eating swan prolonged life, so banned the rest of society from consuming it. They don't want the general public living too long, but the queen is eating roast swan and will live to be 110.

Swans are no problem, majestic and graceful if a little territorial. Black Swans are Top Trumps though, enigmatic bastards Ducks are legitimate waterfowl and enjoy my support. Canada Geese are vermin.

You'd be amazed how much bread gets dumped in the cut in some areas. I'm pretty sure its from restaurants and shops - out of date product which they would otherwise have to pay to dispose of.

"If you must then feed them with a suitable seed mix, like you would put on your bird table in the garden." We don't eat that white processed plastic called 'bread', we only throw to ducks the finest wholegrain-rustic-farmhouse-countryside-organic bread. I haven't seen any dropping to the bottom, every piece snapped up piranha-style. And what's wrong with encouraging rats? They have families too, to look after.

Basically, feeding bread to ducks is like buying a hungry homeless person a Big Mac meal, it's not as good for him as (say) a lentil, quinoa bean and spinach bake, washed down with a kiwi fruit, carrot and star anise smoothie, but he'd still appreciate it and in fact would probably prefer it anyway. I sometimes throw the odd bit of bread to birds because I don't tend to have much else to throw them, unless they would be interested in fag butts or empty cans of Special Brew.
