I heard that if you kill a canada goose you can get a small reward. A bit like squirrels. Just send CRT the bill.

I had wondered about befriending canada geese by feeding them well followed by calculated removal of individuals to oven. Its a lot of aggrevation. Would be best to clip their wings so they can't fly but they are scary buggers to get close to. Perhaps a CO2 fire extinguisher would knock them out, quickly clip the wigs then keep them as pets, feed them then consume for sunday lunches.

My mum used to keep domestic geese on our estate when I was a small child. They were delicious ! I doubt a flying wild bird would be as nice to eat.

Makes sense... a bit like those firework aeroplanes which had one long wing and one short one which could only fly in circles until they eventually maimed somebody... banned now alas.

There is a fishing club near us that has beautifully kept fishing lakes complete with nesting swans and other wild life. The swans are perfectly friendly and seem to coexist with the club no problem at all. I guess not all clubs are the same.

I hate people who say you can't give bread to ducks. then our temporary truce is well and truly over. processed food is not very good for humans - it's bloody awful for wildlife that depend on foraging when it's not convenient for you to go down to the local pond to feed them (which is usually in the winter or in bad weather when they need food the most). If you must then fed them with a suitable seed mix, like you would put on your bird table in the garden. I'm with Foxy on this (as you may well remember 🍻👍) The ducks down our local lake have a taste for bread now. Seed sinks and has no attraction for children throwing it to feed the ducks.

The problem with encouraging people to feed the ducks healthy foods is that most of these healthy duck foods don't float. This results in people scattering food on the banks for the ducks. Not too bad out in the countryside, but in a marina you just end up feeding more rats than ducks. I don't feed the bastards at all, I don't want to encourage them to hang around my boat. Noisy little fuckers. Make sure you feed them around a neighbours boat, preferably someone your not keen on.... They learn quickly where food is likely to be presented to them. Not many feed the ducks on our lake, they took a bit of feeding and leaving to their own devices to get over the timidness they first had. Now they are more than happy to gobble up our stale loaf ends from the same spot.

Sometimes ducks will fly or paddle quickly towards you if you make a hand movement. I've done some experimenting and it is often possible to control a duck's movements by making a rude hand gesture such as the "tosser" hand-jerk. Its a bit sad really.

Hmm. I don't like ducks flying towards me when I'm insulting other boaters behind their backs

I think man has been feeding bread to ducks, since bread, ducks and man was invented.
It seems to be something deep in our sub conscious, we have no control over.
Amazingly ducks are still around, in large numbers, and I have never seen a deformed or mutant one.
Maybe feeding bread and other similar foods isn't THAT bad really.
Remember that it was 'the experts' that decided we should go to work on an egg, then several years later decided they were bad for us.

I don't really mind people feeding the water fowl and birds but the side effect is that you get them begging (in the case of swans quite aggressively) as they see the function of humans as a provider of food. I would prefer to share their environment without this worrisome and stressful behaviour.
