Morning all
Yesterday a chap i chat to on a boat website/forum got in touch saying that a TV researcher has been asking for contact details for me as they want to chat about my boat project etc.
They are making a program on small spaces that people have made on low budgets and was wondering if i would be interested in being involved in the program.
There searcher emailed me quickly after i gave my friend my email address and she introduced herself and what thye are doing then asked if she ask a few questions about the boat etc.
Not sure what to do really incase its a scam thing.
Not to mention me being a shy chap and quite really.
What would you do ?

Check her out on Google for starters? If she has a reasonable reputation, and you don't mind your boat and yourself on TV, then why not?
Just don't be like those berks on survivalist documentaries where they show the whole world where their 'secret' food stores are!

You can always pull out if alarm bells ring....they can make quite interesting programmes if they are genuine and not out for hyping up. At the end of the day up to you whether you want others to see your dream come into reality and how much work it takes.....I don't think anyone has any idea of the input into these projects unless they have attempted similar. Let us know how it all goes

If you want to be involved with TV, then go for it.
However, I would advise that there is no such thing as reality TV.
What is broadcast will be the editor/programme makers version, and it will be a 'show'.
If they think portraying you as some kind of buffoon will make for good figures, that is what they will seek to do.
You will merely be part of the subject matter, and powerless.
I accept that the above is a very jaundiced view, but sincerely held.

Before I was on camera the interviewer agreed he would not ask the obvious silly question - what happens if it all goes tits up? Sure enough after a few minutes he came up with the obvious question, to which I replied 'fuck off you c*nt'. Needless to say the silly question did not reach the TV screens.

You will merely be part of the subject matter, and powerless. How about getting them to sign a small contract saying that you have the right to view the content to be televised before going on air, and that you have the right to pull out anything you think is unsuitable, or that you simply don't want.

If it was another series with Tom Cunliffe i'd say go for it without question. www.tomcunliffe.com/boatyard/Tom seems the sort of guy you could spend an interesting afternoon in the pub with. Otherwise, keep yer Spidey senses on if you agree to it. Rog has a point, TV now seems to be the lowest common denominator approach, easier to make TV for Muppets to enjoy than a decent well researched programme that those with a bit of grey matter can enjoy. Fair play if you go ahead, I'm too shy and retiring to agree to go on the telly!

Provided you don't mind the world and his dog seeing your face then the whole process of making the program. Is quite interesting, I have been involved myself at one time and found it fascinating Phil

I was involved once in the making of a language video..the lady who had translated Sophies Choice had written script that the publishing house decided to go with as a thank you for the £££'s she'd made them..or so she told me... Anyway eldest son cast in the lead role..they employed me as 'tutor/chaperone' but I also had a go with continuity/helping with lighting and jumped in as an extra when they needed another bod...fab fun dashing around Surrey in old CV car driven by producer with son in the front seat. I had copy of the tape until son reached the age where not cool to admit he did this and he uplifted it.....one day maybe I shall retrieve back for grandchildren to view.

Very true comment. A lot of quite interesting programmes seem to have spawned lookalikes engaged in a race to the bottom. I tuned into one the other day as it had a similar name to a previous reasonable program but it was designed for those with an attention span of a goldfish ..... unwatchable (To be honest I find the majority of TV nowadays to be dire, It's a delight when you find a factual one that is both intelligent and watchable ...... the subject can be anything, if it is a good program you become interested)

I hate tv. I've been approached by radio, newspaper and tv journalists but always declined to get involved except for when John Sargent (a twat ) rode on my barge up Limehouse Lock. Seemed rude to refuse. I expect I was edited out anyway.

If you do do it, make sure you don't mention Thunderboat. You will forever be known as that sweary, chip-shouldered weirdo.

Well more negativity towards the idea than go for it. I spoke to my brother today about it and he said nothing to loose so go for it. Which is true these is nothing to loose. But then he is more out gong than me, i like to chat to anybody but that`s a different matter. Hardest thing is that i am a shy quiet chap and cant talk normally at the best of times with out getting words messed up. Why i am thinking on it is that i was offered a magazine article on my projects and was then let down by the editor for no reason given. I was told he is a prick anyway by a journalist that know shim that put me onto it. So that has made me think twice maybe. I have looked at the website for the researcher and all seems legit and see they have done some crap programs some not bad. www.betty.co.uk/Rare i watch to telly tell truth as some of you guys have said nothing but crap on it. I need to think on this a bit more but it does seem a bit over my head. Could do with the bloody money aswell.
