I guess I'm just naive, I find it so hard to believe that a building that houses that many people has somehow managed to slip through the cracks and not have a sprinkler system, or fire alarm in this day and age. How did the building manage to get insurance without those two esscential items? Such a tragic and needless loss of life, not to mention all the surviors who have lost everthing. The regulations don't require a sprinkler system. Apparently it had an alarm but residents are saying it was too quiet and didn't wake them.

So it looks a bit like the ventilation system/smoke extraction system was triggered to activate on the signal of the fire alarm. If the fire alarm fails then the smoke extraction system doesn't activate and the ventilation system continues to pump air in to the building. That would basically turn the block into a large blast furnace. The videos of the fire look a bit like that's what happened, and the resident reports that they didn't hear the fire alarm would tie in with that.

I posted this elsewhere, excuse the lazy c+p but it been a long day. I spent a most of my 'professional' working life employed in various contract supervision/management roles as part of a team acting as Employers Agents/Consultant Surveyors et al almost exclusively for embryonic H.A's, TMO's, ALMO's, EMB's and probably many other acronymic housing management models best forgotten, to sort out their maintenance function in the emotionally charged and politically sensitive Large Scale Stock Transfer era. I would put my money on inadequate or absent fire-stopping contributing to the failure to contain the blaze. I would also be surprised and concerned if the cladding system specified didn't carry some sort of fire-rating. I have worked on similar projects and my initial thoughts are that this was either the inevitable consequence of poor specification and/or poorly written Contract Docs and/or a poor/incompetent site inspection regime/general slackness. I wouldn't fancy this one on my desk.

This is not a thread to use a "like" but I agree with you. As an Electrical contractor (power and data) working mostly in office blocks, I often found a cavalier attitude to fire breaks by other contractors. To the extent, that intumescent breaks were not even roughly replaced in the riser, let alone a proper break installed. However this was normally in smaller contracts where there is no Clerk of Works and no proper overseeing of contractors or subbies. Customers often only look for snagging in the cosmetic parts of the job.

I worked for Smith doing asbestos surveys and some of the fire breaks are non existent also I know asbestos gets bad press but I would rather have it in a fire than superlux no contest at all

Also getting close to the time when the authorities release info about the number of people missing. There is a lot of anger and that isn't directed towards the Police at the moment. The mob mentality when anger is so raw can easily change though and being seen not to provide the information you know has a time limit on it.

From the TV interviews etc it seems that the residents of this block have had serious concerns about the fire risk for some time and despite raising these concerns with the local authority, London Fire Brigade (LFB) and management committee nothing was done.
One resident even said that members of the LFB had been to the block last Saturday to re-enforce the 'Stay put' policy.
I hope for the sake of the families of those lost that HMG do appoint a strong leader to the public enquiry and in perhaps a couple of years (it does take ages) a full report is published AND (oh how we laughed) some one at fault gets what they deserve.
Funny how companies have started to delete web pages already is it not?

Even if web pages are deleted I thought they were still retrievable for those who know what they are doing... Its difficult to think what the 'one at fault' deserves...how can u punish for the horrifying event that occurred?...lessons need to be learnt and measures put in place sooner rather than waiting for an enquiry...this must never happen again....the 'experts' will know what needs doing for other high rise flats...hiding evidence and possible causes is criminal

What an awful disaster. So what about our great leader's behaviour? Fair enough to go and see the upper echelons of the system, no doubt they provided tea and buns. However to ignore the suffering survivors and locals who had to watch the horror! The excuse was "security"! Scared of a few home truths no doubt, same as the election campaign, hiding away from the public. The shameless heartless ice queen.

I'm not so sure ...... whenever there is a disaster and I see politicians visiting, maybe it's the cynic in me but I always wonder how much is "look at me, I really care about you. Vote for me next time"
The Queen ? well she doesn't need votes so I think she feels it's her duty to show support.
