Looking at our Pearson's canal guide I suddenly had the thought to try for Goole (after Selby) and then thought we could see if we'd beat Johnv there! Do ya think we can tackle the Aire & Calder all the way there with 10 horse power? Today I made a new very loose timetable and we've got loads of spare time.

I'm not sure where you are at the moment, but I'm assuming that if Selby is the next place you're heading for then you'll be coming East on the Leeds and Liverpool just now, then Aire and Calder from Leeds to Knottingley, down Bank Dole Lock on to the River Aire at Knottingley, down the Aire to Haddlesey Flood Lock then along the Selby Canal to Selby. If that's so, then you'll already have done all the river sections of the Aire & Calder to the East of Leeds before you drop down Bank Dole Lock and into the Aire again at Knottingley. Coming back from Selby via Knottingley again, there are no more river sections on the Aire & Calder between there and Goole. If you do happen to end up making a race of it, then the quickest and shortest route from Selby to Goole is to drop into the River Ouse at Selby and run downriver to Goole and get back into the Aire & Calder through Goole Docks, which is only just over 16 miles away from there, but don't try that part of the Ouse for the first time on your own - you need to find another boat to go in company with, and it must be one that's done it plenty of times before, and really know what they're doing !

Thanks Tony - so I'm assuming there's not much flow in the Knottingley - Goole section. Bell ringing in Skipton, Tuesday, and a bike ride or two around the Dales first. Goole in 3 weeks' time, 4 weeks latest. Aug 10th gotta be back at Heathrow.

Because your coming past me I'm on that section somewhere for a while. I'm not letting you both sneak past without letting me buy you a drink at least. your boat will be fine on. Maybe we could have the first" thunderboat gathering" in Goole at some stage? I think johns going to be there for a while. I'd quite like to have a look at the boats at Goole, as well as johns of course anyway see how it goes.

By next Thursday we should have a clearer timetable. Rental car idea still jotted down. Loads of little tasks to deal with too ASAP, weather for next few days looks rainless. Normally we have a rigid timetable, this holiday we are just mucking about and enjoying boating. Boat seems OK, all systems 'Go' and well under budget.

Your on one of the best bits of water for just mucking about on, as long as you avoid the sillsden boats.

And bought two tickets for tomorrow's duck race. There is a real duck here on the Aire with just one leg. I wonder if a pike had the other one. Changed engine oil - third time in three weeks - and new filter this time. Going in the engine 'ole now for some scrapin' & paintin'

You will have no problem what so ever with 10 HP particularly when you get back on to the A&C it's wide deep but benign. If you've coped on the 'river' bits the rest is a doddle to Goole. (Give our old mooring a wave at Pollington)

Goole in 3 weeks' time, 4 weeks latest. Aug 10th gotta be back at Heathrow. That section is completely canalised. Once you go through the flood lock at Ferry bridge it's plain sailing and all none river stuff. If you are lucky and the weather behaves you can often pass straight through the flood lock as it will be open both ends. edit - PS when you get to Google the Yorkshire Waterways Museum is worth a look. www.waterwaysmuseum.org.uk/

Righty-oh! Nice Polish bicycle-repair-man put new front mudguard on me pushbike. I scraped with new, sharp chisels in engine room and pleased to discover what look liked fractures in the frame the engine sits on were just the edges of scales of rust. Ended up scraping half the engine room floor which I painted Aug 2014 - I'm guessing the dryness has made rust bubble under the new paint. Covered in a new layer of red oxide; green Hammerite to go over in a day or two. Elsan emptied, drinking water bottles filled. Wine cellar needs re-stocking. Logs all cut and axed and made our own kindling - the Co-op is asking £5/bag for kindling (usually £2 at Hebden Bridge coal merchants).
Bell ringing 1000 to call the sinful to church - or just to annoy them!
