One set of grandparents used to have a dog called Nigger, the other set had a caravan with loads of Robertsons Jam stuff. None of them were racist even judging them by the standards we have today.
I still wouldn't use the word nigger at work in any context unless it was used when the people hearing it would fully understand the context.

Pretty offensive. Probably racist but let's remember that posting racist stuff is not illegal. Only inciting racial hatred is illegal. Definitely stupid and ignorant. The guy has been prosecuted for posting menacing messages, which is of course a criminal offence, mostly in relation to offering a reward to someone running Gena Davis over. Nice! IIRC he didn't post in the public domain, but in some group maybe a closed Facebook group? TB posters be warned!

In the early days someone made mention of the dambusters dog nigger. Someone trying to make trouble for the forum pressed the report abuse button at the bottom. This goes straight to proboards, no copy to me. I got a PM from proboards instructing to remove it and ANY SIMILAR ABUSE (their words) from the entire site within 48 hours or the board would be shut down. Just sayin.

Personally I think the comments about her race and running her over are pretty close to inciting racial hatred.

Is it out of order to find the term "the nigger in the woodpile" amusing? Its so archaic I can't see how it could be seen as offensive except by someone wanting offending ! My parents used that phrase with little or no thought as to its meaning ( living in West Wales I never met anyone of a different ethnic origin until I was 8, her name was Susan and I went home and told my mum that she had a lovely suntan ...... she was black!). they also used the term "nigger brown" in the same way as "French navy". They weren't racist, just unaware.

Seems quite interesting. A toff puts up messages on a "private" face book, found guilty of something and will be sentenced next week. Where's D9?

Mum recounted the story of the farmer neighbour who had nothing but bad things to say about the furriners. Then one day Najat (the foster sister) visited us and met the neighbour. He was in awe

we used to collect Robertson's gollywogs, found under the screw cap of a jar of jam. If you collected enough you could send off and get an enamelled golliwog badge to wear on your school blazer lapel. Do u still wear it to Women's Institute meetings?

I had a golliwog rag doll..you just did I don't think I even realised they could be portraying coloured people. The raciest thing just didn't exist where I lived..in fact i don't think i saw anyone of a different skin tone First became aware of racism by my dad having real problems at work during strikes with the violence in picket line generated by other nationalities....his language describing the 'offenders', a wake up call...he then became quite racist which in a way was amusing as his skin tone went very very dark in the sun and with his grey eyes he looked foreign.

I never got one, so I couldn't have worn it, but I must ask - what is your personal experience of W.I. meetings, on a scale of 1 to 10?

We had many plaster Gollies. In Sainsbury's we would pull out the paper gollies behind the back label from the jam & marmelade jars on the shelf. I find Barbie dolls offensive, depicting 'Caucasians' as white, skinny nudes.
'Golly' was that miserable estate keeper in Lord of the Glen.
