Having just had a headache from sorting an issue out with my HSBC app (which failed to startup after an update), I was wondering what you guys think about the way banking has gone in general, I've been with HSBC (was Midland) for over 30 years. Personally I liked the days when you knew your bank manager and the face to face relationship you had with the staff at the local branch...and there were many branches to choose from! Put simply there was trust. Now I have an account with what is basically a Chinese bank with Indian telephone call centre staff. I've got nothing against them, but I won't ever meet the people who now have control of my money...sorry meant 1's and 0's on a hard drive in yet another part of the world, The world has gone mad I tell you! Anyway, I had a look at the reviews for the newish Metro bank which is meant to be be more face to face. Unfortunately the reviews didn't do them any favours. One review mentioned the smiley face of the greeter at the door....and that's where the competence seemed to end. So what do you reckon guys? Hide cash under the pillow....oh bugger...won't be able to do that much longer I hear. Rant over.

I am now with First Direct which is part of HSBC. U.K. Call centre staff who are pretty good. Thumbprint recognition on the phone app means no more having to remember "characters 5 and 8 of your password". Until you phone them of course! The only annoying thing they did was block my debit card when I was buying the new Skoda. Card machine in the showroom, entered my pin all smiley - transaction denied! Despite the fact that I'd phoned them the previous day to tell them I was buying a new car! However it didn't take long to sort it out over the phone.
As treasurer of the gliding club I still visit a BoS branch fairly often to pay money in, but whereas 10 years ago I would have a stack of cheques, now most people pay by standing order, BACS, or card machine so I rarely get them, just a bit of cash from people in the "gig" economy or other tax dodgers (no, that IS unfair of me!). Other than that, I don't really have need to visit a branch. Which is just as well as First Direct don't have any!

It's just the way of the new world, forget about it and enjoy life.......... Relatives recently tried to transfer 10k from one of their accounts to another (computer says no...). Six weeks later after numerous attempts to sort things they made a complaint, told they had to wait 8 weeks before solution, 'failure to agree letter' was requested asap, money transferred two days later.

I was with the Midland from leaving school, then dumped them when they changed to HSBC and went with the Abbey National then dumped them when they changed to Santander and have been with the Nationwide ever since.
Never had any real problems with any of them. The Nationwide call handlers all speak with a Yorkshire accent but you cant have everything I suppose.

Now then...
I've been with Yorkshire Bank since I was 16 (more than two or three years).
Trouble is they keep shutting the damn branches.
They've even shut my own branch down, and moved me elsewhere.
Oh they did say I can keep my sort code.
What a lucky boy.

Magnetman's suggestion makes sense, although gold is rather common. I suggest rarer elements such as Scandium, Lanthanum and Platinum.
HSBC is run by the mafia known as 'the Chinese Government' - all rotten 100-year-old-eggs.

New large deposit of Scandium found in Finland - was in a Finnish newspaper couple of days ago.

What's with Goole? Anyone going? Any ideas?
We set sail on the high tide tomorrow, toward the Mysterious East (Yorkshire).
Today we saw Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough, Whernside, and the toilets in Carlisle's Debenhams.

Rog Did I mention, banks are the devil's spawn We don't need barter, we just need to be nice to eachother...no, on second thoughts that won't work either. Still, every other creature on this planet seem to manage without money...mind you, a lot of them aren't very nice either.

Or see them off the train? Lovely up there innit! I've only been up Penyghent, to finish off our walk up the Ribble, several years ago. A grand adventure up that way is to go down Gaping Ghyll Pot. Bradford Caving Club do a couple of "open days" where they drop you down the hole on a wire winch to spend a couple of hours wandering round in the dark and mud, then winch you back up again.

I have always been happy to recommend the Nationwide and their Flex Plus account on the basis of the insurance products they offered included in the fee of £10 pcm.
But as I predicted a few months back they haven't been able to sustain this and have upped the cost from September to £13 pcm and reduced the number products included. They have also revised a number of the insurance products they still include, most specifically for us is the specific removal of pet repatriation in the event of vehicle breakdown in the UK or Europe, this is a deal breaker for us as we now will need to pay for the services of a product that will (the Caravan Club do). They have also removed extended appliance warranty cover which was one of the reasons we had the account.
As we will now need to pay for UK breakdown cover and European breakdown/travel cover separately to get the cover we need I am not happy to continue pay the Nationwide for a service that is of no use to me. I am now looking about to see of anybody provides this or I will just downgrade to a basic non packaged account with the Nationwide as in all other ways I have been happy with the service.
