On every canal bridge in Leeds someone has painted 'Hari Krishna'. Someone else has added 'is gay'. Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare is gay.

Actually, although I'm as atheist as it's possible to be, the Hare Krishna mantra is incredibly relaxing to listen to...

I dont blame anyone or anything for things beyond mans control. Its just the way it is. What i do criticise is the dogma that keeps people repressed and unable to be strong for themselves because "its Gods will" or "god mustve neededanother angel in heaven" or the dogma that teaches some things happen because God has been insulted or displeased. Yes, religion is used by certain individuals to control people. So is it the message of love and peace which is wrong, or those who abuse the message for their own aim? Religion is designed to control people. Just look how Christianity took over the indigenous ancient religions of europe in order to control the populace. Pagan festivals and rituals taken over, then the pagans told that there is only one God and if you dont follow him then its death. Best form of mass control ever invented.

Probably like some others here, I went to Sunday school when I was a kid and I did take an interest in church on and off during my adult life. My views have changed a lot over that time. I certainly see the controlling side much more but not to say that there are some lovely people who follow a religion of some kind. Of course theee are lots of nice atheists out there too! That's really where my views are at the moment. There is good and bad in everyone and everything. So long as we look for the good in everyone things aren't so bad. I do still believe there is some form of creative force behind the universe and that we have some kind of connection to it, but I have no idea how it all works. I'm really not convinced this is only the result of some cosmological accident either. I quite like the idea that we are all part of some kind of collective consciousness, but again can't prove it. All I know is that this is an amazing life and I'm glad to have had this opportunity despite the up's and downs. I've gone through times I didn't want to live anymore to times I didn't want it to end. I have learnt a lot from suffering, bad times and making mistakes though...so maybe good even comes out of bad...

I use Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) to help me - it's not as bad as the name might appear to seem - basically a bit of stuff taken from Buddhism and mixed with fairly sound science, whilst recognising that no one fully understands the human brain. More on CFT here - apt.rcpsych.org/content/15/3/199 - bit heavy for some people though. My thoughts are that most religions started as a philosophy and were then hijacked by some to control people. This morning though I'm mainly hating the God/Goddess of rain and the Met Office...

It would be interesting to see how religion would have developed without words and but just with body language. It begs the question whether apes do religion in their minds. Us humans think in words but still feel in body language as I'm sure apes do.

I sorta get what they mean..however I think I'm counselled out and for me to try to fathom yet another branch of the mind healing tree is gonna be the bough that breaks... Mainly unless the triggers occur I feel calm all the time inside.. the destructive self criticism gone...I no longer need the guiding hand of any religion...buddhism was the closest that got to controlling me.....it helped me recover and now I'm reasonably content. As to religion each to their own, I think if people need that control in their life they seek it.
