Personally, I think (and the boatyard which removed the engine also think) that it is a compression problem, i.e burnt out or sticking valves, sticking or broken piston rings etc. There doesn't seem to be enough compression when turning the crankshaft pulley by hand (although there is some). I wish I had got here while the engine was in situ and had a look then. Ricco says it won't fire when using Easy-Start so probably not a fuelling problem.
Either way there's not really much more I can do so I'm pushing off tomorrow, I'll be passing back through in a week's time so I'll stop off and see what's occurring then. It was nice to meet Ricco, hope he gets things sorted soon.

Perhaps TB members might be willing to chip in towards the cost. Just a thought after a couple of whiskies and a beer.... I'd be willing to help - but you all know where I am.

Is a new (or new-ish) outboard engine out of the question? How about a horse? Pony? Donkey? Ugly woman with strong thighs?

Even the ugly women with huge thighs are knocking me back at the moment Foxy.
I'm also in the 'repair' camp. I hate throwing things away that are perfectly fine apart from one or two aspects. I know most people like new things, they are hoodwinked into believing that they are better or more important than other people who have older things. The government like to push this too, scrap perfectly servicable things, buy new, it's good for the economy innit. I recently repaired a pair of glasses I bought in Indonesia (cheap rubbish, read Chinese.) But just because the frame breaks why throw perfectly good lenses away? So, out with the J.B. Weld which happens to be a similar colour, clean with white spirit then the expoxy, hold the lot together with clamps improvised from rubber bands and fishing line. OK they will probably break again one day but for now I've saved the world from a little plastic, all the bad things that come out of design, delivery etc., and I can still read the Thunderboat forum. A real win:win, what's not to like?
Mind you, I'm wondering whether the ugly girls with huge thighs might see a little blob that's a slightly different colour on my glasses and think: 'cheapskate, not having him boning me'

It's a tough call, especially if you don't have savings. Spend money on rebuilding an old engine (and it could cost quite a bit who knows till it's done) and you have an old engine that's rebuilt. Buy a new engine and it costs more, but you have a new engine, and it will be many years (hopefully) before you're back in the same position. I wish you well Ricco. Hope you can resolve the quandary to your satisfaction. I'm still chewing it, but edging to new (cos I'm lucky enough to be able to stump up the cash). Rog PS Someone will always buy the old one. Don't throw it away

It's just lost compression! It might just be head gasket as it happened suddenly. You guys! I'd have whipped the head off before removing the engine.

Yes, so would I, and in fact there were numerous other checks I would have made before even doing that. Ricco does acknowledge that in hindsight there were better options, I've made untold numbers of decisions in the past which I later realised I should have handled differently, but as I said to him you can't un-ring a bell. I like Ricco, I've spent a couple of days here now and he's a genuinely nice bloke, so I hope he gets sorted out soon.

Did he find the timing mark on the pulley?
Not diesels, but I've autopsied and repaired scores of engines. Compression test first, you could do that with engine out I expect? That will confirm either that it's fine and the engine can stay in one piece as it's something missed, or it's spanner time. Best try and enjoy it, rockers off (probably), head off, have a look. If you then rule out gasket and valves it's rings. You can inspect the bores for wear too.
At this point you've lost nothing, spent nothing and will have enoigh info to decide how to proceed. You'd have to take apart to repair, if it's proper fooked you've done no harm either. 👍

Compression test results: expected 600psi one pot was 510, the other 180. Head off. Head gasket in poor condition, probably blowing on one side. Bores are fine. Rings are stuck fast to both pistons. Valves been tested as I write this but apparently OK, might need lapping in. So 2 sets of rings plus various gaskets and a whole load of labour to get the engine back in. I feel relieved, should be on my way by the end of this week.

What causes the rings to stick? Curious. That doesn't sound too bad or expensive. Good luck with it.

The mechanic suggested it might be down to excessive running at low loads. I haven't done this, I have solar or use a genny for charging, but usage before I bought it 4 years ago is unknown.

Are you using the right type of oil?

Perhaps you just haven't been using the engine very much and it's just thought "I might as well be dead" and gorn and rusted itself up out of spite.

^^^^ exactly this Mitsubishi in the car world have a bad habit of using oils that only they can supply which is ok for the first few years then after that it all goes to shit and so do the engines! Good luck with the engine its the best way to go and although it leaves me with a BMC1500 Apolo duck is my friend
