The water leak was where the hose joins the back of the heat exchanger. I'd fastened the hose clip down tight, but obviously not tight enough. Managed to get an extra 1/4 turn on it, seems to have done the job, dry as a bone now. Tricky getting the heat exchanger off with the thermostat housing in place, then getting it back together without losing the gasket, but job done I think. For a chap who originally proclaimed to have very little mechanical experience, it sound like you've done a bloody good job considering the position you were in suffering a towpath breakdown. Good work fella, hope you get many more years trouble free use from it!👍

And now use the engine a bit! It will never get warm if you're just continuously cruising between King's Lock and Wardle Lock

I've made it to near Church Minshull without any hiccups, apart from getting totally soaked. It's awesome here, no noise apart from cows in the field opposite. Makes a great change from Middlewich, trucks thundering past at all hours really did my head in, 4 weeks was more than enough.

I've noticed a slight leak from around one of the 2 bolts that holds the thermostat housing on. There's a brass washer here but it's not doing the job. There's possibly a Vetus o ring that's needed here but knowing them it's probably about 50 quid. I was thinking of trying some sealant. Any recommendations what might be suitable?, bearing in mind it would need to be heat resistant.

Any ordinary silicon sealer will do for now. The3n try a copper washer that you have heated to cherry red and allowed to cool.

If you need to anneal aluminium, rub a streak of hand soap on it, heat till soap goes brown.

If you need to anneal aluminium, rub a streak of hand soap on it, heat till soap goes brown. Does it then need quenching like copper.

No, neither does copper need quenching, that just cools it quicker and with copper, flakes the oxide scale off to some degree. At skule we used to have a sulphuric acid bath to remove the scale, which slowly turned blue with copper sulphate.
