We were recently shopping for an unusual bottle of gin as a present for a friend, when a jolly pleasant chap approached us, introduced himself as the manager of a gin bar, and helped us with our choice. We of course enquired what his favourite was and he said 'Sir Robin of Locksley'. And we finally picked up a bottle in the wine shop at Lapworth. It is very, very good, and furthermore it's from Sheffield. Strongly recommend it. The Swan at Henley in Arden can also be recommended for their range of gins, and at £3.50 a go, it's a lot cheaper than the £9.50 we were charged in London. The more you drink, the more you save Rog

Slightly predictable, but my wife did describe me as "boring and transparent" !

Ah, Mother's ruin.
I can't get on with it tbh, I'm still too juvenile to drink grown ups drinks like G&T, Whisky etc.
The intake of loopy juice has steady up too, Brown beer is the order of the day at the moment, looking forward to visiting the Brandon Brewery on holiday this year 🍻👍

Because I am a sad cheapskate I now drink Aldi own brand gin at home, it won an award this year, £9 a bottle. Better than most main brands. All gin needs fevertree tonic rather than schhhh you know who

Aldi's own is Cromwell gin isn't it. It is good for quaffing like Bells is to whisky.
These expensive gins are like buying a quality malt whisky. Special stuff.

Yes, I could not help but notice that there's a 'Gin Fashion Show' going on in England at the moment. What's this all about? Gin and grapefruit soda makes for a nice Summer drink. Sometimes I have drunk gin on its own. People claim that vodkas have different tastes, and I'm now guessing that people are saying the same about gin - but to me (so far) all vodka tastes like vodka, and all gin tastes like gin. I remain to be educated. Single malts of this Summer for me were: Glen Keith, Glenlossie, Tomintoul and Tullibardine. Johnv offered a respectable Strathisla.

The fun is in trying as many as you can, whisky and gin.
You really haven't tried the gins if you believe they all taste the same. Like saying Laphroig tastes like Dalwhinnie.
And yes, gin is all the fashion at present. Lots of micro brewers are also branching out into gin.
Adnams, which make excellent beers, are also distilling gin which is very good.
Taste it straight. Having done so you may wish to add something, but a quality gin is fine alone or with ice.

This thread reminds me of one I started a few months back, about single malt whisky. The choice I made was disappointing to say the least.
I would wager most people don't have the real ability to make discernible choices when choosing spirits.
For gin I would always choose Bombay Saphire and for whiskey glenfiiddich. Beyond that price point I wouldnt appreciate any difference or wouldnt like them.
Each to their own of course.

I would suggest that even you would be able tell a difference between Laphroig and Glenfiddich, or indeed between Bombay Saphire and Sir Robin of Locksley. You may not be able to identify the drinks, but you would certainly taste the difference. Of course, it is entirely possible that you would not like any, or indeed all and would not be prepared to pay the extra cost. A chacun son gout as our french ex partners would say Rog

Gin is a bastard.
Dress it up however you want.
Discuss the relative merits of the aromatic blend, grow an interesting beard and move to Shoreditch if that's your bag.
The fact remains that Gin is a bastard.
That's all I have.

You'll probably have to go to a 'proper shop' to find these, but shouldn't be difficult to find one now that the Internet-thingy has been invented. Try: Glen Keith, Ben Nevis, Blair Athol, Craigellachie, Edradour, Glenfarclas, Glendronach, Imperial, Linkwood, Longmorn, Mannochmore, Rosebank. If disappopinted I'd be happy to buy the rest off you - provided you haven't been swigging out of the bottle, but have used a glass.
