I was also thinking that water running down the exhaust pipe and into the engine could cause piston rings to rust (?). Rusted piston rings due to failed gasket leaking water onto them?

I suspect the headgasket has blown between the cylinders, If Ricco is lucky its just a gasket set and easy fix

Interesting idea that Foxy. The previous owner installed a cheap metal pull handle type thing over part of the exhaust, presumably to stop water getting in. I noticed that one of the rivets that hold it has fallen off so I guess water could potentially get in. There again, I can't see how rusted rings would cause this problem. I suppose it's possible though.
Hot water is via a Morco I have 3 big panels that provide ample electricity. 2 generators on board as well, just in case.
