In Black wall tunnel they have large lumps of metal hanging down. This seems a good approach. It will not cause wedging but almost certainly be noticed by a driver even if they are furrin. If you had progressively heavier bits of metal with sensors on them then if the driver continues to hit them you could then have some sort of flashing light thing and a barrier that drops down. This should happen well before the bridge. Donkey's years ago when I was a kid Albert Bridge in Middlesbrough (my home town) which is a rail bridge had a 'trip wire' laid across the approach and if a high vehicle caught it a Stop light would flash and a bell sounded. Not sure why it was removed TBH. Also local buses that were able to pass under the bridge were fitted with 'white steering wheels' rather than the traditional black. www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/local-news/albert-bridges-former-safety-measures-3766045

I presume if they went to that much trouble, they had lost a few buses.
