I have worked full time (usually full and a half cause I'm a bloody idiot) for 28 years up until 30th Sept when I reached the end of my notice period. Only had 2 employers (various jobs for both): began working in internal audit for a county council... transferred into payroll, then computer system implementations, then pensions, then left to become a learn direct IT trainer... which morphed into becoming an IT consultant which took on a residential lettings role due to my bosses pension plan then 3 years ago went to work in Vintage fairground restorations. ONLY the last job was fun and I quite enjoyed it... other than the fact I worked for an idiot who couldn't afford to cash flow the business so i did for a while. When he bought himself a new range rover vogue whilst STILL owing me 6k I spoke my mind. He'd been sulking ever since so just before I was about to have my first carpal tunnel op, he gave me 3 months notice of redundancy and that's that. Here I am now,2nd hand still not brilliant and signed off until 17th Nov - I've put in a claim for esa and when that finishes I'll use my savings to get us through until April next year, by which time we'll hopefully be able to begin trading as a hotel boat (but not a proper one) = assuming I get the ruddy website up and running and advertised somewhere to get some bookings. www.narrowboatellis.com

When we're out on the boat we use buses quite a lot, and in rural areas I have often thought bus driving could be a good job. Mostly elderly 'regular' customers, driving on less busy roads, and your own boss whilst on the bus.
Just off to work now as a christmas elf in retail. Jane and I top up the pension in October, November and December, and cruise the rest of the year.
We're aware how fortunate we are.

Cheers Rog. It's VERY much a work in progress... we haven't decided on quite where we're going yet (hence the empty links) - I suspect we'll begin here in Wakefield and head over to Liverpool and back. Our current plan is to have 1 week on, 1 week off for the summer and do our own thing over the winter ... I need to work out how to create some kind of booking calender thingy before I start faffing around with getting it to come up on google searches etc.

I think you'll have more luck with bookings on the more touristy canals, Llangollen, southern Oxford etc.

Started working life in hospital laboratories (I have a fellowship in Haematology) basic pay was rubbish so I went into pharma sales & marketing. Brain tumour and a realisation as to how a corporate entity treats you when youβre down led me to join my husband whoβs Wills & estate planning business was becoming to busy for him alone. So now I am self employed and write wills etc for a living. Once daughter is through Uni we will wind down and retire, so seven years and, health permitting we wil be looking to spend a year on the waterways.

Guests I assume so you guys roughing it in the salon, making up and storing bedding... sounds like hell to me! Best wishes though, if you can make it work it will be a fun way of earning a crust. π

Served my apprenticeship training as an electro-mechanical service engineer, mainly in the processed food industry, repairing sausage making machines, industrial bowl choppers (big enough to make mincemeat out of a scrote) and electronic weighing scales, needless to say I haven't eaten processed meat products for over 30 years and in fact very rarely eat meat anyway.
Learnt all about simple light / optical switching whilst doing my qualifications and ended up leaving to get into fibre optic splicing &testing, fixed line & mobile Telecoms & Internet / TV Network maintenance and upgrading, mainly working on Alcatel / Nokia / Cisco core routers plus Huewai / Fujitsu kit as needed.
Earlier this year I moved onto nights & work 4 x nights Monday-Thursday as downtime is only permissible between midnight & 6am. Never work weekends due to live sports etc demands on TV plus, I presume, more people masturbate at weekend so need uninterrupted, trouble free internet feed!π Enjoy the freedom of working on my own, dealing with issues and general fixing problems as they arise, downside is always working on my own and having to deal with problems with no help from anyone!
Going to do it for another 3 years maximum while my girls get thro Uni / apprenticeship then I'm packing up and going Bridge hopping / CCing for the rest of my years!

Best wishes though, if you can make it work it will be a fun way of earning a crust. π We planned the boat around it from the outset - the (only 2 max) guests, will be in the front bedroom with sole use (during the night) of the bathroom... we'll be in the back cabin ( twin singles dinette) sepeated off from the galley and lounge by the 2nd toilet door (which is cassette for our use only)... IF (as we have an idea to do) we do a couple of solo travellers months each year( with NO surcharge) they can be in the back in exchange for saving for paying for 2 people if you follow. time will tell how it pans out - we need to do 12 weeks a year to cover all our living costs and top up the savings.... that's the plan anyway.
