Neat, I knew some cars have this but it never occurred to me that some wagons would have it.

That is very impressive but hopefully drivers don't start to relax too much knowing the truck will take over and stop if they are not concentrating properly.....

Has Volvo done a cut n shut job on the front end of the red (Vauxhall Vivaro / Renault Master??) van just waiting to be smashed up at the start of the video?

Is this for them Eastern European types that can't stay awake as they fiddle their tachographs to do all hours and then can't stay awake? Why would you need this sort of system? A driver should be competent, qualified and responsible. As for the first video - how comes the truck driver had time to press the horn? The braking and steering would mean you have not a moment to piss about toot-tooting. Pressing the horn often means removing one hand from the steering wheel (as in Scania - very daft place to put the horn button in the middle of the steering wheel). I'm still of the opinion that the truck driver should have expected those kids to run out in front of him, as I would/do. Yes, I'd toot the little fuckers just to put the willies up them. In the USA it's illegal to overtake a school bus when it's at a stop with its lights flashing. When I was at driving school (for buses) in St Albans, Herts. there were signs in buses with 12 points as to why it's your fault and not the child's if you hit one: ie, may be deaf, kids under 12 have no sense of speed. Them automatic brakes will not work on black ice - the only solution for that is loads of sand/grit (not salt) all over it, but that's an expensive solution. I see it all the time, people driving too fast (thinking they are clever and fancy) and people driving too close to the vehicle in front (because they are lonely / herd instinct / moron). Sorry chaps, that's the way it is. I wondered about the truck horn too, but I think some trucks ?? Volvo have the horn button just off the rim so you can reach it with your thumb. Mr Stabby will know.

It's a bit like cars really, some manufacturers put the horn on a stalk protruding from the steering column, as Foxy says on a Scania you have to push the steering wheel centre, most Volvos I've driven have two horns, an electric horn and an air horn, the air horn is operated by a button on a stalk, is very loud and means "Fuck off out of my way, I'm coming through", the electric horn is operated by one of two buttons on the steering wheel, is more discreet and means "Nice tits, darlin' ".

Anyway - little use is the horn when you're going to hit someone for sure - unless you want them to glance up and see what's gonna whack 'em! If the child hadn't started running away from the truck he/she would have been hit.

Steady tone and volume of the horn in the video.

If the child hadn't started running away from the truck he/she would have been hit. Yeah - gotta laugh though, it is a bit funny! Watch the video again and look at where the child started running away from the truck and where the truck ended up stopped. Then watch again and try to work out what made the child suddenly be alerted to the danger - I don't know but the horn sounding may have played a part.

I used to have a Mini a bit like that (a proper one not the current incarnation). I wired air horns via. a change over switch so the steering wheel push operated each horn depending on where I was driving, open road/motorways or in town.
