Not really expert on this, but the physical ID is "hard wired". Not sure if that actually gets passed over the network, though. The IP address will be that of your router, which will change with power off/on, unless you have a fixed IP address allocated. Perhaps an identity of Freddy Fudpucker might last longer? As I recall, PhilAterley ? had quite a good run. edited to add :Could also ask a question about navigating on the River Trent (but not as a first post, maybe). That might throw the dementers off the scent ..... Thanks, Iain, I'm not at all comfortable or very familiar with this modern technology. I have found a website with instructions on how to 'hide a computer ID', which I've been trying follow for the last hour or two, but as yet without much apparent success. I don't really understand what they've done or how they've done it, but now I can't even view CWDF via an 'incognito window', as I have been doing. When I try to log on to the site now, all I can get is a message saying - "Sock puppets are not permitted. Your ID has been banned and will continue to be so banned. Posts will be hidden pending further review by moderators."There are a few ways you can be identified, firstly the IP address from which you are posting. However for most people, the IP address changes when the Wi-fi router is re-started, or if you move to a different Wi-fi network. Then there is the MAC address which is a unique hardware “address” built into the device (phone, tablet, laptop etc). Then there are cookies, little nuggets of information stored in the memory of the device you are using, that a browser can report to the website you are visiting. So for IP address you simply have to reboot your router or move to a different network eg a pub’s free Wi-fi. The MAC address isn’t passed through a Wi-fi router as far as I know. However it is if the device is connected direct to the internet ie a phone on 3G. Cookies can be cleared by means of a browser command but this is a pain as it will wipe out remembered login / passwords / preferences for other websites. However most browsers have a “private” mode whereby they neither accept nor release info about cookies, so that is a better option. So, connect to the internet via a different wifi, clear cookies or use “private” mode on your browser. That should allow you guest access. Not sure if it will allow you to create a new ID, you might have to clear cookies for that.

Thanks for that, Nick, it's a whole lot clearer and easier to follow than the 'How to hide a computer ID' website I've been looking at. I'll give it a go later on today.

However if those in command over there are reading over here and they don't want you there won't they now be suspicious of newbies joining today?..not that Im subscribing to any conspiracy theory against you...It might just be they forgot you were not allowed/on moderation or whatever they do to people who disturb sensitive folks feelings.

Routers do not always change IP address when re-booted.
MY Virgin Cable one doesn't. I can go for weeks (once months) with the same IP address. It only changed when I upgraded my VM router and then the new one stayed too.
Racking my brains from when I was once a mod on a forum with the ability to view but not alter any info. under the bonnet mods. can normally see if a new ID is using the IP address of a previously banned member, including any other IP addresses that ID might have used. They can (or we could) also see if a new ID was also using the same email address that had been used by a previously banned member so it pays to change the email addy you are using to register with. Both Gmail and Outlook allow the use of aliases to go to the same email account so this is relatively easy to do.
Additionally some forums will automatically detect if somebody has faked an IP address using some of the software solutions out there and will just refuse to allow you to register using that IP address giving a message along the lines of 'piss off you are using a fake IP addy and you are not welcome here'.

Oh yes that is true for cable internet. I am hoping that Tony doesn’t ascribe to that level of tech!

When I had my temporary ban from CWDF I could still visit the site using private browsing mode either not logging in (guest) or logging in with Jeff’s ID. So it was all about cookies. But perhaps they have become cleverer since then?

As to the OP. TBH I am increasing disillusioned with the relatively small number of forums I am/was on.
The amount of misinformation and conflicting misleading info. you see on them is quite staggering sometimes so I visit them less and less and resort to literature and respected web sites for any information I need nowadays. Pointing out that somebody is talking shit in an internet forum often offends and only results in an argument anyway so I increasingly just let stuff pass rather than correct them.
I visit here less and less too but it is probably the only one still worth visiting to read the 'craic' rather than for what limited serious info, there is on here.
By coincidence My New Years resolution is to to spend even less time on forums than I do now, which should be easier as I have even less free time now than I have had for a long long time.

Use of VPN or Torr will hide your true IP if using a 'fixed' ip like virgin does.

oh dear - I appear to be a forum tart compared to many... The T Bar, Same for the T bar - I've loads of mg fs and tfs... and everything you need to know is there... I was also a regular on 'The T Bar' with the same name as here, probably something like 6 years ago is last time I posted there. I used to offer a keyfob reconditioning / alarm reprogramming service over there, gave it up when my sister sold her TF and I had no base vehicle to practice / reprogram my recon fobs on, went on to sell all my car alarm programming gear to a happy Aussie T Bar member! Was a good, helpful forum, I Still get occasional calls now asking for jobs doing so there's still a market there to be tapped into😉

The T bar is ace - likewise, since I got rid of our 2, I don't have reason to log in very often... I think I'm the same name as on here too - the guides are brilliant -
Although some folk do get a bit paranoid about the instructions of how to get into the bonnet when the release cable siezes up ... it took me ages to get that one sorted lol.

oh dear - I appear to be a forum tart compared to many... UK Saabs, Detailing world, Outeverywhere, SLK world, The T Bar, landrover forums, talkelectrician forum, C70 owners club to name but a few - I'm not as prolific as I used to be - mainly because I don't have the cars any more, but when I was working on them, I spent a lot of time there... especially the Saab one... those guys are great - one chap even took his dash apart to take a photo of the brace-bracket I snapped when fitting it to stop the bulkhead cracking further on my old 93. Same for the T bar - I've loads of mg fs and tfs... and everything you need to know is there... C70 owners club? Do they cater for the more popular C50 and C90? After all, they were machines Honda mobilised the post war world with. I had a C50, it was brilliant.

lol I doubt it - the c70 remember, has 4 wheels and a convertibe roof (hence the "C") ... though I suppose all scooters could be classed as "open top"

He reckoned it was the thinking drug dealers car. It was purchased as he couldn't bear to have a BMW 3 series convertible - cool headlights (it was around the time they started using the 'angel eye' lights) were not enough to encourage him to join the elite of BMW drivers

Used to belong to a "step through racers club" (all owned big bikes as well,) First Wednesday in every month used to race to Maldon in the evening .....couple of pints and a Chinese then race home. all in full leathers and boots, usually two up and generally nearly falling off the bikes from laughing too much. 50's and 70's were allowed but 90's were forbidden ....... only stepthroughs with magneto ignition allowed. Very fond memories of some great nights out back in the 70's
