I am disappointed with Magnetman's New Year's Resolution. I thought it was going to be 'less blabbing'. Well that may indeed by one of my new year resolutions but I'm not going to tell everyone about it !

Like many, we are both going to do Dry January to give our livers a rest... we don't think we are dependant, but neither of us can remember the last time we went more than 48 hours without one.
Next on the list, is to switch to a vegetarian diet for a few months and take a bit more exercise - since moving on the boat, we've both put on nearly 2 stone... I suppose we're more content, eat more and sit around chatting with other boaters more.
Having a glass of wine/gin has become habitual so we'll need to break that habit and from memory, the best way to beat an "addiction" (if we're calling it that ) is to replace it with another... just need to find what the other will be.

I can. Doesn't really hurt, and you can get back to it after a year. But, life is short, and do you want to enjoy it or possibly live a couple of years longer by being miserable and eating kale and quorn "because they are healthy"? Red wine courtesy of quaysider now, and just pulling a nice-smellin' beef casserole out of our oven. exactly why put yourself through the ordeal, you might lose the weight but a year later when you start again you'll put it back on again. Moderation is the key. Moderation is the key. I never thought I'd see Kris type that

Don't take my comments too seriously, Peter, my sister calls me the 'Master of Generalisation'. You wanna hear what I say about people who wear glasses... Of course I agree with your comments above. Not the excuse-for-alcohol one though. We set off this week Wed morning and my first beer was Fri lunctime in a pub as beer is a good match for chili-con-carne. As I said, I'm having a go at leaving the alcohol-calories aside in 2018 as I have never been as heavy as I am now (78kg / 1.74m tall), and then I should practice for the Pennine Way (which will be a 9-week wander not the usual 3-week sprint). And a bit of excess weight off me might be good for my rusty lumbar regions. I risked a vegetarian breakfast on Friday at Tesco's - as I too know we don't need great slabs of flesh every meal - but they still have them sausages tasting like Steptoe's socks in the laundry basket. ps - we have done a quick calculation of how much I drink: 60€/month hard alcohol (whisky/vodka) 20€/month wine 4€/day beer This all comes to 2420€/year - 6-8 return plane tickets Finland-England!! Yes, I think I shall reduce the drink this year. And tell that pissed-up tosser next door he's gotta wash & polish our car! Hi Ross, I wasn't going to take this too seriously, but now that I see that you're saying things about people wearing glasses, I'm not so sure anymore I've needed glasses to read about 10 years ago, and since 5 years permanently, except for the middle of the night, this because I discovered that they don't help me seeing my dreams (nightmares) any better. For different reasons (mainly health) I haven't been very physical active for a while, and although I don't drink (alcohol) and don't ea t meat, I've gained more weight than is good for me, so now I have to be extra careful not to fall on a road with a slope, as I would just roll down all the way to the bottom of that road, if there aren't any trees or lampposts to stop my roll. Maybe if you see a few photos of a few of the cars I owned when I was in the Nato, and that was for a big part the reason why my "friends" wanted me to drive them. The first one I bought when I was 18 the car was 11 years old, but had done only 35.000kms, I used to earn my pocket-money washing and polishing that car before, as it belonged to a wealthy neighbour who wasn't allowed to drive anymore, and because he knew that I loved his car, he sold it to me. You can see how proud I was standing in the car with my head through the sunroof. About 2 years later I managed to buy an even nicer one, an ex- ambassy car, and as my car was much nicer than the car of our general, everytime he had other generals visiting, he asked me to drive them around, to show off to his fellow generals that his car was much better than theirs. On the photos you can see them parked next to each other in the street where I lived with my parents in Amsterdam, all that's left is just memories, and some old photos. Peter.

Your story about the car sounds like Gran Torino a good film. As for drinking alcohol. I suspect that people who don't are probably the lucky ones. I have been drinking several cans of beer or cider every day for about 20 years (am 43 now). So yes I am dependant. I have stopped now and then for a few days and once for quite a long time when I had a tooth extraction and the bleeding didn't stop I decided it was the alcohol causing it. Apparently it (alcohol) can interfere wih blood clotting. But it wasn't - it was a dentist who drilled a hole in an artery !. I went to the quack who told me there was nothing wrong with my liver. Which was nice. I sometimes have too much, always have more than the elf advisers recommend but I know the "can I hold your hand" alcohol guidance is bollocks anyway. If you don't want or need alcohol then that's good. I have a 70 year old boater friend who has exactly the same attitude as bargemast and he has seen people destroyed by drink. I'm sure he's an alcoholic (once an alky always an alky). But I don't know for sure, Anyway if anyone has any serious ambitions for the new year then I would like to wish them all the best and I hope everything goes well for everyone. I suppose its possible that the forum may see it's first dead member in 2018 but let's hope not I read somewhere that if you have more than 70 units a week you are an alcoholic but on the other hand I read that if your alcohol intake does not cause you significant problems then its okay. In theory. But then I did let the cat out of the bag about the calendar so perhaps I do have problems.

It shows. I must admit I'm not planing on going far tonight. What I always ask people if they are questioning their alcohol intake is, can you go a day without a drink and it doesn't hurt? If the answer is yes then I don't think your a. Alcoholic . But then what do I know.

If the answer is yes then I don't think your a. Alcoholic . But then what do I know. I've read that the definition is more to do with what happens when you have alcohol in your blood than what happens when you don't. I always thought the withdrawal problem was more related to things like cocaine but I don't know as my alcohol intake is probably very low compared with proper drunks. I suspect the "drinkaware" type guidance is probably a deliberate strategy to sell more beer. Tell people to drink less and guess what they'll do. A bit like Cameron saying he was anti brexit. He was obviously pro brexit but he knew he was such a despised tosser that if he claimed he was anti then people would vote for brexit simply so they didn't agree with such a slimy fishfaced scumbag not realising he was bluffing. Anyway happy new year innit !
