Mr G says Highway code 268. Do don't overtake on the left! In the case of a undertaking a middle lane hogger Technically speaking both drivers are committing an offence. The centre Lane hugger for careless driving by not returning to the nearside and the undertaking driver for that offence. I am aware of cases such as this being in court and successful prosecutions being the outcome So what is the penalty for the offence of undertaking, and can you provide an example of someone being penalised for it? none It's never been an offence while I've been alive. I can only say that doing what we've both Said is fine but if you start weaving in and out to undertake the careless driving will come into play. But I suppose the coppers on here can confirm.

You might be right. I understand the offence of undertaking was removed in 1972. Can still get done fore careless/dangerous driving though if you are likely to cause a problem. (inexpert view).

I always assumed that overtaking a vehicle to the left on a motorway was an offence.
A bloke who bought boat off me was going to drive me home in his van and warned me that he was a fast driver and he believed in overtaking on both sides as he was in effect the same as a vehicle traveling slowly past stationary cars. Not very convincing and he didn't drive fast occasionally hitting 90.

Whenever I'm out with the kids on the motorway and we come across a member of the Middle Lane Owners Club, we play a game called "lapping" whereby we overtake said car in lane 3, drop back into lane 1, slow down and let it overtake us, pull out and overtake it again, then rinse and repeat. We wave at the driver every time we overtake him.
I don't know why we do this, we're just childish I suppose.

I suspect careless will do. But only cos that's the easyrroute for BIB and the cps. I think now I'm struggling to remember that someone undertook a police car by going to a slip road for the m271 at the bottom of the m3 and then back across. I can't remember if he got done for due care and attention or careless driving but definatly not dangerous. Failed the attitude test which was his biggest mistake.

Failed the attitude test which was his biggest mistake. Absolutely, I regularly get pulled by the VOSA (Actually, they're called the DVSA now but we all still call them the VOSA in much the same way as we all say HGV even though they have been LGVs for 20 years now) and the most important part of the check is the attitude test- some serious bum licking in the earliest stage of the interview. I have absolutely no sense of shame and I'm always keen to get on my way so I just give the obligatory kiss of the chocolate starfish and then fuck off before they discover my trailer MOT is three months out of date.

A soon as I've been pulled over apologetic and polite. Gets you off a lot. Cracks me up on these t.v. shows where they are arguing and being stubborn. Then and up Getting nicked for something. When all that was going to happen was a lecture. But they became scroates and got the copper digging for stuff

A policeman acquaintance of mine once told me I had failed as a woman as I argued with a traffic cop instead of crying. I took his advice to heart and by Jove it works!!!

While mis spending my youth, roady-ing etc, driving about late at night, I bought a merc 306 van off the local "Rocking Vicar". It had a huge smiley on the back, with "Jesus Saves" and a sticker on the front window, "thank god for Jesus". The Vicar asked me to leave them on, so I did. It put a different light on me when stopped, a different attitude from the plod. The front window sticker got moved to a few vehicles down the chain of cars I went through, same effect. I did get mithered by Christians at festivals, who thought I was like minded, some quite huffy about it.
