Last night it snowed a bit and this morning was minus 1 Centigrade which meant that the snow stuck to the watery surface and then froze - completely different surface today - like driving on sandpaper. Anyways, I had noticed that the rapids at Niskankoski (between Himanka and Kannus) look nice around 1155am when I drive past on my way back to work, so stopped and took a pic today:

Look at the road surface and think - can an automated vehicle really handle this? You can't defy gravity, and a road with a camber/slope will have you slithering downwards to whatever is there (usually a deep ditch). 31 years of driving buses makes me with my experience a tad ahead of the fastest computer-operated vehicles. That's not me in the picture. Reading today's paper (KeskiPohjanmaa) it says there were 'tens' of vehicles in ditches yesterday. For the sake of some sand/grit and some wages for the spreaders. Finland is run by greedy, selfish bastards, and they all want to be the President - election boards up now on the streets. The present President is an incompetent berk who is always sucking up to the rich Swedish-Finns (tax dodgers who despise him, but who find him a 'useful idiot'). Glad to know it wasn't you, but on roads like that it could happen to anyone, even to the most skilled drivers, unless they stay home talking from their armchairs about all these bad drivers on the roads. Peter.

They can provide tons of sand in some places for all these annual sand sculptor competitions but not to save lives on roads....summat not quite right with our World.. Take care Ross....they be slippery roads....I'd hate to drive on them....I would soon be in the ditch I think that they have more snow and ice sculptor competitions in countries like foxy's. But sand on the roads would be cheaper for the insurance companies than paying for all the accident damages. Peter.

No money in that, much better to let the accidents happen and push up the insurance premiums....

Yes - yesterday I thought I was heading for sure off the road several times - there are some tricks such as driving slow (of course), trying to get the wheels on any white patches of snow rather than pure ice, trying to stay in the middle of the road so the camber doesn't drag you over, not braking hard but putting the clutch down and slowing down without touching the brakes, braking hard sometimes when you want to force the thing to slow down or slide, keeping an eye out for any vehicles coming towards you and slowing down well before meeting them, braking well before bus stops so you don't wipe the kids out... but no matter how hard you try you may come to a patch and it all goes to Hell like on one long bend yesterday in Väli-Viirre where I was swinging all over the road diagonally this way and then 45 degrees to the other side - with some fuckwit approaching fast in a car - I really thought we would hit but she realised in the last moments and stopped - blonde teenage girl - and looking at her phone - can't she see a huge bus careering all over the road? Anyway, weekend now, can forget about work and the roads for 2.5 days If the vehicles you are meeting on the roads are driven by someone with the same driving techniques than yours, you may be safe, but one teenage girl, or retired-sleeper may change your possibilities, and that's how-and when accidents happen. Enjoy your 2.5 days off to relax and don't think about icy roads. Peter.

It really boils my piss when I see someone doing it and I would happily drag them out their car by their nostrils, stamp on their phone and slash their tyres.

Well they do say it has similar effects on your driving so maybe the punishment should be similar. I Still beleive in all single vehicle accidents, the driver should be automatically given points for without due care and attention.

Strange they don't give the result off the hearing.
I'd be surprised If he kept his job, but you never know.

Its pothole alley up my road again....they've repaired top half but left some real gems to nobble cyclists further down the hill....
