I need a name, i am trying to sort a facebook page out. I have got `Helm to Keel` maintenance `Cabin to Keel` maintenance `Boat Smith` `Boatfixer` `Boat Man` doing my head in, its all i think about lol. come on guys n gal you al have good wit ;0:) Of the 5 names you listed "Boatfixer" sounds the best, but there will be better names to come. It's good that the underpriced job is only a small job, as long as they don't tell other people how cheap you are, or if that's the case, just tell the new ones that you made a mistake. Peter. I am going to tell him i priced it wrong. I ddi price up two jobs for him separate as he asked, the second is a better priced job The name Boatfixer has a chap already with that name but for the `The` at the start. thinking on either `Cabin to Keel` or Helm to Keel` maintenance.

How about simply "All boat maintenance" ? or "All boaty jobs" ? Peter.

For what it's worth I like Cabin to Keel, covers the lot.
Although Peter's All Boat Maintenance does the same!

Well done faffer. It's not a bad thing that you made the mistake on the pricing so early on, t'will make you stand back and think about it next time.
For the work you are going into I can't help. My company name and email address are long winded, try not to do this, it's asking for spoiling mistukes.
Keep it short and sweet.......... email faffer@marine.co.uk, for example.
Can I ask what the £510 insurance covers?
And, just briefly back to the quoting, don't think it won't happen again in the future, it will. The secret is to keep it to a minimum.
Side note: Did you get your NCB sorted? I'm lead to believe (second hand information) that Adrian Flux insurance recently took a friend of a friends work related NCB.

(snip) thinking on either `Cabin to Keel` or Helm to Keel` maintenance. Masthead to keel ? Pointy end to blunt end?

Der de der de der de der de BOATMAN !
Sorry.
All boat maintenance sounds good to me.
Mention of keels may put tin bath boaters off.
Rog
ETA and of course ABM (All Boat Maintenance) comes quite early in alphabetic listings.

I've been having a think as well .... I'm afraid I wasn't much cop at company names ..... my first attempts at starting my own company had names that said what I did. neither of them ever really got going properly but died in infancy. A lot was due to making basic mistakes (same as your undercharging experience) Pricing is always a bit of a minefield ..... one tip I learned the hard way ..... If you are quoting for the supply and installation of a particular bit of kit, that you know is on special offer at 50% off at your local suppliers. Don't quote based on that price !!! as sure as eggs are eggs you will get the job, go to buy the bits and find they are sold out and you can only get them at the full price !!! Another thing I found that you need to do, is make a fixed charge in your quote for the little consumables .... grommets, cable ties, screws, glue. sticky tape,wd40 etc. It is truly amazing just how much the "one of those/couple of inches of that" add up to and almost impossible to forecast what you will need .... I found a small fixed charge stops it coming out of your wages The only name I have come up with ..... and I think it is too jokey is BoatswayneGood luck with your venture Wayne

As for pricing, just get in there. Best advice I ever had was from a car painter I was haggling with. He wouldn't come down anymore and said "I can earn fuck all sat at home watching tv."
Worst situations for me were taking on large jobs at knockdown prices reasoning that something was better than nothing, only to be offered better paid work that I then had to turn down because I was busy running around breaking even. Eventually the penny dropped and I learned to have faith in "something will turn up", losing my fear of having no work and getting the chance to have the odd day off.

just having read Lollygagger's post ..... excellent, one thing I will add to that ...... When you are really busy and have no time to do it that is when you need to be touting for new business.
One man bands often have this problem, you only have time to market your firm when you are slack but there is always weeks/months lead in time. If you can get someone else to do the marketing it prevents the rush/slack roller coaster that effects so many very small companies

Names based on "hull" parts etc will get go hull type repairs. If you're aiming for interior work you need a name that screams that.
What type of work would be just what you're hoping to do? Glass fibre? Wood? Mechanics? Electrics? You can be a jack of all trades, but narrowing things down will make your life easier.
