My tuppence worth...
Most important thing when you are first starting out is to do a good job. On my first independent job I probably ended up working for less than a pound an hour (my mistake - sort of.....). When the client received the finished work they said I had set a new limit to what was possible and I ended up charging £700 a day.
As for names - choose something that means something to YOU, even if it's quirky - it will show people you have a personality.

Well done faffer. It's not a bad thing that you made the mistake on the pricing so early on, t'will make you stand back and think about it next time. For the work you are going into I can't help. My company name and email address are long winded, try not to do this, it's asking for spoiling mistukes. Keep it short and sweet.......... email faffer@marine.co.uk, for example. Can I ask what the £510 insurance covers? And, just briefly back to the quoting, don't think it won't happen again in the future, it will. The secret is to keep it to a minimum. Side note: Did you get your NCB sorted? I'm lead to believe (second hand information) that Adrian Flux insurance recently took a friend of a friends work related NCB. The insurance is 5million TPL cover, no heat works and moored/ashore. No tool cover as i dont have roof. I asked work if they would help out on the car NCB and they said they will give me a letter to say i have had no accidents, so just need to call around but for the Berlingo car i have it is only chap i reckon wiht commercial use on it from Moneysupermarket, they are usualey the most costly so i will be ringing around now as i normaly get it cheaper then still. I will call Adrainflux, have had then on the past and have been good but on classics. (snip) thinking on either `Cabin to Keel` or Helm to Keel` maintenance. Masthead to keel ? Pointy end to blunt end? You wont be getting me up any mast `Bow to stern` was a similar though i had today Der de der de der de der de BOATMAN ! Sorry. All boat maintenance sounds good to me. Mention of keels may put tin bath boaters off. Rog ETA and of course ABM (All Boat Maintenance) comes quite early in alphabetic listings. `Cabin to Hull` maintenace ? All Boat Maintenance isnt bad I've been having a think as well .... I'm afraid I wasn't much cop at company names ..... my first attempts at starting my own company had names that said what I did. neither of them ever really got going properly but died in infancy. A lot was due to making basic mistakes (same as your undercharging experience) Pricing is always a bit of a minefield ..... one tip I learned the hard way ..... If you are quoting for the supply and installation of a particular bit of kit, that you know is on special offer at 50% off at your local suppliers. Don't quote based on that price !!! as sure as eggs are eggs you will get the job, go to buy the bits and find they are sold out and you can only get them at the full price !!! Another thing I found that you need to do, is make a fixed charge in your quote for the little consumables .... grommets, cable ties, screws, glue. sticky tape,wd40 etc. It is truly amazing just how much the "one of those/couple of inches of that" add up to and almost impossible to forecast what you will need .... I found a small fixed charge stops it coming out of your wages The only name I have come up with ..... and I think it is too jokey is BoatswayneGood luck with your venture Wayne Good thoughts on consumables i though of that but never thought of costs really, and as you say they do add up, the bits n bobs on Faffer of certain jobs have gone to around £30 for one job. Boatswayne .......MMMmmm........ Names based on "hull" parts etc will get go hull type repairs. If you're aiming for interior work you need a name that screams that. What type of work would be just what you're hoping to do? Glass fibre? Wood? Mechanics? Electrics? You can be a jack of all trades, but narrowing things down will make your life easier. I would prefer just internal work as fitting galleys heads/alteration and repairs but i shouldnt be to picky i think. Any jobs i get offered that i cant do or dont want to i will just say no or get a lacky to do it, like hull scraping. My tuppence worth... I remember seeing a cartoon with two blokes stood outside a factory with a sign on the building saying :-
Roger's Tool Works.
The captain read.
'Bloody Showoff!'

Don't get carried away, otherwise everyone will start thinking you are more about marketing... Business cards are useful though.
