Well, do your homework, don't rush it. Don't be too enthusiastic, but also get your arse in gear. The main issue is are you capable, and if so, then the technicalities will just be 'noise in the background'. If it doesn't work out, or you find you don't like it, there are plenty of driving jobs as a safeguard.

Don't undersell yourself...ensure your rate covers petrol/travel and some for you... guy whose self employed and does bit work occasionally here charges £12 hour...hes bloody useless..I couldn't reach my windows so ask him to clean them..they are covered in scratches,...other workmen charge between £100-£120 a day and the roofer £150..but then son whose a qualified diver only got £150 a day diving here in Swansea repairing summit quite dangerous...that was well below rate but he made the mistake of accepting the work before discussing wages...Suggest you have rate agreed up front....

I wouldn't price any job by the hour. Give a price to do the job, end of. Don't forget you will be running a car/van that needs insuring, and maintaining, don't fall into the trap of thinking 'well I need a vehicle anyway', your business should not only pay your running costs, but also be able to put some money aside for when the vehicle needs replacing. Get an account with any company that you will buy parts from, and stand firm when you are asking for trade discount. Your income also needs to cover your holiday pay, just because you are self employed it doesn't mean you aren't entitled to holidays. Insure all your tools, if they go missing you ain't working again until they are replaced. Public liability insurance is usually cheap but it's a must in my eyes. Office/admin time needs paying for, people might see you going home at 4:30, you ain't finished work for another couple of hours, mind. Get a good accountant he will save you much more Than you pay him, ask other sole traders that you know who they use, and why. Good luck.

Where's the embarrassed smiley when you need it! Twats! Boat is an average of 2.1m wide, gunnels are a bit wiggly, the hull having banana-ed over the years. The gunnels rotted a bit and let the sides fold and wiggle a bit. It is a bit Springer ish but far older. I reckon it was an inspection launch, with inboard engine, made of 1/8 plate, with a covered cabin over the front half. There's a lot of original khaki paint inside the hull, don't know if that is relevant to it's history. Registered in '68, as was everything on the water at that time, it is a few years older than that. I must do a "start to finish" post with a few pics.

Business planning isn't hard, common sense really. List what you need to live, without going silly, then you know how many jobs you need at a particular rate to achieve a baseline, a minimum of what you need. Don't forget tax/NI, public liability insurance, pension contributions etc. There are templates around, people promote their own best way, but they use their own branding for the same thing, a marketing ploy.

Which is why I like to drive a bus and just sit there and be a stupid lump. Someone else does all the office work, arranges the servicing and replacement vehicle. I am free to think of other things. The money rolls in for little effort.

It may well be a woman, mind you, like the rich bitch Ann wotsit, who owns Stagecoach, made a fortune with predatory practices, driving small bus companies off the road.

Ann Gloag (nee Souter): had public footpath diverted so the poor peasants could not get close to her big house in Scotland. Scottish government approved of this.

Brian Souter and Ann Gloag of Stagecoach - responsible for cutting drivers' wages and stealing their pensions. Brian is now a 'born again Christian' - something to do with worshipping money, I think.

Brian Souter. "In 2000, when the Scottish Government were planning to abolish Section 28 laws, which forbade local authorities from "intentionally promoting homosexuality", Souter was the prominent leader of the Keep the Clause campaign to prevent its abolition. In Scotland, where Section 28 was known as clause 2A, Souter spent £1 million on the first privately funded postal referendum across Scotland to gauge public opinion. A spokesman for Souter stated "He is not in this for personal glory. He is fighting this battle because he is a father and committed Christian." " "Souter, who together with his sister is worth an estimated £730million (the pair are 118th on the Britain and Ireland Rich List), claims he would rather “take poison” than swallow bold plans to control fares and routes in the public interest, therefore reducing how much he profits from travellers. Grim threats to shut depots and sack crews, hysterically denouncing councillors as “unreconstructed Stalinists”, is the crazed reaction of a bus bandit behaving as wildly as the greedy energy fatcats who menacingly predict power cuts unless they’re allowed to continue ripping off customers." www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/kevin-maguire-bullying-stagecoach-bus-2931974Sometimes I wish there really were a Heaven and Hell, as downwards is the direction for filth like the Souters.

Foxy, we get the message, but faffer is looking for advice on setting up his own business. You on the other hand are doing a great job at derailing his thread.
I probably should keep my mouth shut being an outsider n all that, but your input on this one isn't any help to the lad.

While I agree, it can be disconcerting to have lots of off topic posts in a thread. It's just seems to be the thunderboat way.

I was talking to a chap this morning who can't find anyone to do some glass fibre work on his boat.
Generally - charge a low rate and you'll get crap bodge work from people with no money. Charge a high rate and you get people with money. I once put my rate up from £15/hour to £40/hour and went from struggling for work to being overwhelmed. Charge too little and people assume you're crap at it seems to be the message.
