He said it was important to remember that you are arguing with a real person, even if their profile picture is a cartoon dog.

Class. I thought it was just a coincidence (maybe they have lots of cartoon dog avatars in Australia?). BTW I quite like your Mr Fredricksen avatar across the road as well

Taking your opponent's objections seriously will help you strengthen your own argument. This also means being open to changing your position when you find yourself unable to defend it. That's ok until we apply the second para to Peter's electric car thread

The man's obviously a fool and didn't go to 'proper school'.
There's no mention of calling everyone names, blaming group think, or using profanity.

I have to admit - THESE days (not always) when I see an online spat anywhere... i move on and read something else - or at worst if I feel something needs to be done, try and interject a bit of humour/distraction... life is too short to fall out with folk.
In the REAL world I bear grudges I'm afraid... I'm working on that and trying to be a bigger person... it's going well...so far I've put on 2 stone!

I do actually think his point is flawed.
You cannot 'win' an argument, as the two entrenched positions merely ' dig in '.
But sometimes it's fun to challenge a view, and see what happens.

His points are all valid. Unfortunately they only work if your βopponentsβ read what you have actually written, and do not then change what you have written to suit their own agenda, which is usually to become outraged. So using such techniques on many people on here would be pointless.

Rog You should be able to. As he says, not by just stating your opinion over and over again, but by backing it up with cogency, reasoning and facts. Any intelligent and rational person will change their opinion in the face of overwhelming evidence.

I try not to argue with anyone...I don't mind a calm exchange of views but when people get riled up I get a bit anxious....some of my family are real put you down experts using their 'superior' stance on life to shred opinions..I should be used to it and keep quiet but now and again I forget
