NZ is an island so not strictly part of any continent from a geographical point of view, however in terms of news areas, it is Asia, or Asia-Pacific as its sometimes known. Or Australasia. Which continent do you think it should be?

Australia is an island but has it's own place in the world according to the BBC. Australasia would be an acceptable term to describe the region.

I think it should be in Oceania. At least, that's what I was taught at proper school.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_(game)It's not even on the map in the game of Risk! "Which continent does New Zealand belong to?""New Zealand has traditionally been grouped under Oceania which is more of a geographical region than a continent. Oceania comprises Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and the many Pacific islands like Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia etc. This ambiguity is because the region comprising Oceania is not a single tectonic plate, which makes it easier to demarcate a continent. New Zealand itself is on the boundary of the Pacific and Indo-Austral tectonic plates.
There has never been a clear classification. It’s neither here nor there. It is not considered part of Australia, the continent. Also it has evidences of volcanism as well as continental landmass. (Generally, volcanism is considered an evidence of oceanic origin and plate boundary interactions.) The volcanism was explained due to the plate boundary location but the continental part was an issue.
Recently, geologists claim to have solved this question. They have found evidence to support the continental make up of New Zealand. The concept of a continental mass called Zealandia was proposed two decades ago and has been reaffirmed now. It is considered to be a micro-continent that broke off from the Australian plate and got submerged underwater. (The floor underneath the ocean waters is extremely diverse in terms of topography.)
Geologically speaking, this qualifies New Zealand to be called a separate continent in itself. But for practical purposes we are still calling it part of Oceania."

It hasn't moved nor are standards slipping. Asia AFAIK relates to a description simply based on how they group their correspondents.

The NZers would no doubt be outraged if you lumped them with Oz! Whereas if they are lumped with Asia, they can’t complain or else they’d be accused of racism

It's easy to tell the difference between Aussies and Kiwis. Although the accents have a similarity Australians are easy to spot as they have the best balanced personalities in the world. They have a chip on each shoulder

The NZers would no doubt be outraged if you lumped them with Oz! Yes, I did a roadshow once for the English and Welsh Cricket Board, and one of our guest cricketers was from New Zealand. I used to be on the microphone and one day I announced to the crowd "This is James, James comes from a small island off the coast of Australia" and instead of being amused by my scintillating wit, he glared at me with absolute hatred.

AFAIK Australasia is just another name for oceana. In my opinion oceana is the correct term and is where NZ is.
Being an island or part of a land mass is irrelevant as which continent would the UK be part off.
And if we went by land mass Europe and Asia would be one.
