Nice. I'd like to see someone hand start that.
I asked an ex tug skipper about it he said he could start any engine by hand and showed me his thumb.joking aside apparently it is possible to hand start a 6L2 but the 6L3 is bigger. Or is the hand starting gear just for manipulating the engine when servicing ?
This is the 6L2 I was referring to. Its in an ex pla elfin safety launch called "Frederick Whiting". A delightful little boat !

Owner recently offered Frederick to me for £20k - he thinks I sweat money (I don't). Its worth £10k+ but 20k is pushing it. Was overplated at braunston in about 1995 - I remember it being done. 20 year old overplating won't be doing it any favours now I doubt Its the type of boat which wants cutting out and replating but it would want getting hold of cheaply..

krisIts odd because Elstree does have a 3LW in it... It is a 3LW - there are three pipes coming off the injection pump (11.00 in the video) I think it is an ex crane engine or similar. Replaced a Lister HA.

You can swing/start 4L3 and 6L3 series engines by hand, . . I've done it on occasions in the long ago when I was young and fit, and it's not something you'd do out of choice, but it is do-able if needs must. It helps that they've got individual decompressors for each cylinder, so you don't get all of them coming on to compression at once, and the raised starting handle shaft being double ended so you can have two people turning it over as a joint effort.
Hand starting a cold engine is always easier if they're fitted with injector pump priming levers - all Gardners are - a good half dozen strokes on every cylinder immediately prior to swinging it makes the world of difference. That 6L2 in the video clip would have lit up easier if the bloke who was trying to get it going had done that instead of spouting off with that nonsense about the decompressors altering the valve timing.

Replaced a Lister HA. It's definately a 2lw in that video. Count the cylinder heads? Then look at the injection pump and how many little levers to prime or isolate the cylinders?

Is it in any better condition than in the video? If not then your right it's not worth 20k. The video is ten years old so it could have deteriated a lot. The problem with a boat like that is what do you do with it, I I aging there's not a lot of accommodation?

Its a 3LW in Elstree so I can't see why it would be a 2LW in the video. I think the box over the middle is disguising it somewhat. And it sounds like a 3. And the bloke doing the commentary inside the tug is Jim MacDonald who knows about Gardners. I still say its a 3LW

Tony Can you look at the video I posted at 11:00 and tell us if its a 2LW or a 3LW .

The box in the middle is the air intake.

It looks like a 2LW but if it is then they have filmed the engine from another boat and cut and pasted it pretending it is in Elstree which is a very bizarre thing to do. Oh well it takes all sorts. you are probably right !

I did mention it i've only been looking at my phone. As I said I think the air box is disguising it slightly. The 3LW is like the 5LW in that it does not have separate cylinders there are two in a block and then another one. On the 5LW its 3 and 2.

Yes and the 6lw has two 3cylinder blocks quite clever really. You should have bought the little boat with the 6L3 in, I would come to London for a trip on the tideway on that.
