No need to blockade the canals. All that's needed is a regular Limehouse to Braunston fatboat challenge. Several fatties set off from Limehouse and make their way in convoy to Braunston doing their best to navigate the difficulties enroute especially if the trip coincides with such events as Canal Cavalcade and other IWA gatherings. A special BBQ and fatboat parade can be organised just by the Wyvern Shipping base. My 12 foot fatty with wheelhouse that has to be taken down for bridges will help I think?

Being nearly 14' wide i'd have to take special care through bridgeholes and hope I don't get stuck, still, we will be paying more so its only right and proper that we use the canals available to us

As a narrow boat owner who defended fat boats at one of those stupid licence meetings, I really would like to think we are in this together.

It would be nice if we were all in this together but that's clearly not the case. IWA and Hire companies against fatties and CC'ers. Boat owners against hirers, Marina dwellers against towpath dwellers, Shiney boats against scruffy boats. The prejudice is almost non stop, even down to Pram Hoods and cruiser sterns.
It reminds me of the peoples front of Judea and the fucking Judeans peoples front, Splitters, not fighting together against the common enemy

We all want the canal & river system to stay open for navigation so we can all continue to enjoy it. That’s the only thing we need to worry about.

I remember my ex's reaction when told by a pompous sewer tube owner that we would have more fun if we got a "proper boat" She (never one to mince words) told him that if we cut his lookalike tin sausage up it might just provide the extra ballast we were needing for our "proper boat"

You've never had lock gates closed in front of you because the shiny boat doesn't want to share with your hireboat? You've never been told not to go in a lock first because theres an EX-working boat coming up and needs to go first? You've never been chatting at a water point and the other person has moaned to you about the moored boats up ahead all looking like they don't pay their licence? Its not constant, but its there, and I agree, we should all be working together to keep the system open for everyone.

I do also think some people look for trouble. Isn’t it normal for us to become grumpy old gits after a certain age? Having said that, we all need to have a good rant sometimes. When I get into these sort of discussions with people I meet I try to sympathise with them but then try to throw up the other sides of the argument. I had a very humble education but I understand that a technique used in some establishments is to get kids to debate the opposite argument to their personal views. It’s very revealing...

Where I am at the moment is a lot worse for preducices against certain kinds of boats to where I was last year. It's like water of a ducks back to me, but it's a shame because we are all boaters and should share the same aims. This whole thing of charging wide boats more seems to be reinforcing an iwa preducices.

This whole thing of charging wide boats more seems to be reinforcing an iwa preducices. The big agendas normally come down from very high up. Above CRT management in fact (I wouldn’t want Mr Parry’s job). The same agendas can also get flowed through those who ‘manage’ so called ‘boating associations’ too. The good news. as has been indicated in ‘jest’ earlier in this thread, is that it only takes a few people to appeal to the public’s sense of right and wrong by taking real action. This effect has won many battles including the one which gave us the 1995 act. The general public at the moment are sick to death of the control freaks who make us believe money is the answer to everything through marketing.. Fortunately not all those in powerful positions are driven by money and understand we ALL need the freedom to learn from making our own mistakes...isn’t that what life is all about?
