Well the Scottish model seems to be going well, maybe CRT can adopt that. You jest, I hope! Similar complaints as with CaRT; too concentrated on property, maintenance being skipped, too high top salaries, etc. The Forth & Clyde is currently closed in several places for the foreseeable future; it was two, but became three, and now more. (I have heard that several bascule bridges are "too dangerous to operate".) The latest communication tells us which day of the week the Lowland Canals will be open;I can't work out how to copy it on here using the iPad, but the relevant email and "service availability " attachment is available on the Lowland Canals Association page on Farcebook.

Apparently there are more than 35,000 boats on CRT waterways. So let's assume 35,000 for thw sake of argument. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how much each boat owner would have to pay in order to maintain a 2000 mile canal network without any external funding? It might make an interesting calculation as that would be the logical license or toll fee if the network was run by private contractors. Obviously they would want their profit as well. I've no idea but something tells me it would be rather more than £1,000 a year each. £35m to operate and maintain the whole system seems a bit low to me. No you’re right. Best let the water drain out over time, tax payers don’t have an interest in the system being maintained after all. Well except millions of people who visit to see the boats, ducks and swans...the thousands of people who fish...the canoeists....thousands who enjoy hiring a boat for a holiday...canal side businesses who rely on the canal side aspect (e. g pubs)...

Here’s another ‘mind fuck’ stat.
Ok take away all the benefits tax payers receive from the CRT network. On average, every boat licence payer would have to cover the cost of maintaining only about 100 yards of the system in length.
In my case that’s only about 5 times the length of my boat for around £1000 per year!

Just did some basic maths using MM’s figures. Divide length of CRT system by number of boat licence payers. I’ve just done similar calculation with the total length of roads in the UK and number of cars (not including buses, vans’ lorry’s etc). The ratio of car length and road length is actually very similar interestingly. My car tax isn’t £1000 per year though.

You have based your synopsis on licence payers only, when in fact the Canal draws cash in from many other money avenues. CRT has over the years trained people to this way of thinking, and it seems to be working.

Your boat liscence isn't going to stay at £1000 if magnetman has his way, it's going to at least triple to reflect the "true cost of boating."

This is of course a nonsensical assumption. I’m sure MM knew that before his OP. However it does make you wonder why the boat licence fee is so high, particularly as CRT DO get the majority of their funding from other sources who also benefit from the CRT network (e.g tax payers and businesses). Not only that, doesn’t only a fraction of the car tax get used to maintain the roads? I think these are good arguments for reducing the boat licence fees actually.

Private operation is the last thing I want ! I think CRT running the system while having obvious faults is a reasonable arrangement and I don't think licenses will increase 3 fold under CRT. I think it could easily be a lot worse and more expensive which is something I do not want.

Yes as you keep saying "better the devil you know' that statement could have come straight out of crt's propaganda department the same as the opening post in this thread. Are you sure your not in their pay?

Comparisons between road and canals are irrelevant because cars for a lot of people are an essential piece of equipment partly due to government policy and big business.
Privately owned boats are purely for leisure or a chosen residential arrangement.
