I wonder what the legal situation would be if you had an intruder, discharged a CO2 fire extinguisher onto them then hit them on the head with empty ext then wrapped their hands and feet up with cable ties before calling 999.
Probably better than killing but something tells me that at the time you don't have that many options.

It does .. that would be the teapot, followed by Olympic standard running away, I think. We have an axe under our bed, ready for my hand to grab it, so that would be the first thing in my hands for 'slaughter'. If I had to go and search for a teapot, that would be 'murder' by your logic. Its not what the weapon is though mr fox, its how you use it, did you plan to hit/stab the thief with that teapot/axe or was he trying to hurt you, so you grabbed teapot/axe and defended yourself?

Oh definitely defensive .... he didn't run fast enough after I grabbed the axe

That was one of Martins mistakes.
Shooting in the back as they ran away.
Not proportionate.

Who cares about the niceties? Just throw the body in the sea, and put their mobile phone on a long-distance train so when the Police track it they think he's gone to Inverness or Penzance.

Given that you have already planned to use the axe and placed it in a convenient location for immediate use as an offensive weapon I'm not sure the teapot matters much.

I've got a hand grenade I found with the magnet. It's a real one but one side had been cut open so it won't actually work. Looks good "In the hand". I would hold it and explain to the intruder that I have a family history of suicide and am feeling very depressed so they may wish to leave I bet that would do it !

You say that but it's not impossible that someone on a boat might keep a little stock of wood under the bed and an axe. Some people let the fire go out at night so the first thing you want to do is sort out a spot of kindling. For that you need an axe. Or some sort of heavy knife of bill hook. I actually use a heavy knife when splitting wood inside the boat. Usually one would do this outside but given a solid base its not really a problem to do it indoors. So having an axe under the bed (as long as its a small hatchet) does not necessarily mean you want to kill burglars.

It is perfectly legal to use a weapon against an intruder. "The most recent case was that of Andy and Tracey Ferrie. They were in bed when two burglars entered their home. Mr Ferrie fired his (legally-held) shotgun at the men. The couple were arrested but then released without charge. The judge at the intruders' trial said: "If you burgle a house in the country where the householder owns a legally held shotgun, that is the chance you take. You cannot come to court and ask for a lighter sentence because of it." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19886504

I'm going to wait and read all the facts on the front page of tomorrow's Sun before making judgement thanks. 👍 OK, I've read all the evidence I need via the headline in the Sun. I think... Make the tough old stabber bloke PM!👍
He'll soon have Russia nuked, Have the EU begging us to come back & save them, Have CRT bailiffs and upper management chucked in the canal and make my girlfriend's knockers grow a cup size bigger!

Apparently he had an accomplice who legged it so there were two intruders that's what the original story suggested.

Apparently he had an accomplice who legged it so there were two intruders that's what the original story suggested. I read in one report that he was found collapsed with the gaping hole in him, a hundred yards or so from the property.... Now did he run? Was he pulled / dragged by his accomplice or was he chased / followed my Stabberman?? This could turn interesting!
