In my opinion you have a particularly screwed up view of the working class, in some ways you seem to associate them with everything that is wrong, I could do the same with posh/highly intelligent people. A mix of views gets the best balance in my view, and if that allows some knuckle dragger sandal wearer to balance out Rees Mogg then so be it. In any case, what is working class? Most people in this country work, but many aren’t what you would consider working class. So what are your criteria for being working class? If you have to work in order to survive then you are working class. If you consider yourself to be middle class but have to work to survive then you are "pretentious working class".

No that is quite wrong, the middle classes are defined as having to work to pay their mortgages on their detached suburban houses, loans for 2 cars, after school clubs for their kids etc. Only the upper classes don’t have to work to survive and even that isn’t right, most upper class people need to work hard just to keep their staff in check, flog them occasionally etc.

Anyway, it seems odd that you accuse me of having a screwed up idea of the working classes, without you actually knowing what they are! So you first bought up the phrase, so tell me what your definition is (oh proper skool edukated person).

Actually, the way to tell a person's class is as follows- Working class- your name is on the uniform. Middle class- your name is on the door. Upper class- your name is on the building.

My definition is thus: people who are not middle class, not upper class, not royalty and not classless. (The last typically being immigrants coming from countries where the class concept doesn’t exist, which is most of the rest of the world!). Anyway, apparently you are one, so tell us what it’s like!

I don’t have my name on any of those things. Nor even on the side of my boat, unlike so many. Mind you, I do have my name on the side of my plane, a bit like Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Does that count? (oh alright then, I don’t really!)

I remember a movie where a man who ends up driving a truck in the USA says "Just because I drive a truck doesn't mean I'm a truck driver." I apply that to me & buses.

I can only go by their general behaviour, and that of those few I know. If the masses had any taste, intelligence and knowledge then commercial TV and newspapers/magazines wouldn’t be full of the mindless tripe they currently are full of. In any case, what is working class? Most people in this country work, but many aren’t what you would consider working class. So what are your criteria for being working class? edit: Bills beat me to my question! I don't think you can have been to many parties of the "County set" or even worse Hunt Balls. There is little to chose between a bunch of inner city yobs and a group of Hooray Henry's

I come from a working class background, my wife came from an Empire/privileged background, we met in the 'middle' because that was what we both believed. I have knowledge of both worlds and sometimes will argue/comment from both sides. When I do argue or comment it is either to put my point of view across or to challenge anothers point of view to see how robust their view is. Most people who know my background would pidgeon hole me as a working class average intelligent bloke.

I found it! Bit of intense brainwork for a few minutes.... Patrick 'Pat' Quid: "Madam, just because I drive a truck does not make me a truck driver." From the Australian movie 'Roadgames': en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadgames

Mind you, I do have my name on the side of my plane, You mean your registration is T-WAT? Only a thick person wouldn’t know that all UK registrations start with G- followed by 4 letters, and that T- registrations don’t exist.
