I don't approve of vandalism and some graffiti is dreadful but some is quite artistic and brightens up shabby buildings and walkways... Ok so they shouldn't have been there but IMO doesn't mean that their death is deserved..if that is what people are inferring. I know people who have done some awfully stupid/dangerous things and their luck held... Families left to grieve i feel for... How would you feel if you came home to find your house "brightened up"? Trains, costing MILLIONS, on which manufacturers have gone to enormous trouble to produce, are not 'shabby' when they roll out of the factory. Why grieve for the families? If you met them, you might find they are of the variety that encourage their Little Angels to kick the homeless in the teeth, throw their rubbish out of car windows, drive cars with no tax nor insurance nor MoT, and spit all over the place. Perhaps their bodies could have just been left by the tracks to slowly rot and be pecked at by pigeons as a warning to others. How many here would enjoy finding their boat 'tagged' in a sloppy, faux-artistic 'style' ? You do write some odious and charmless trash. Just saying. Rog

Unfortunately, it seems that risk-taking and rebellion is almost hard-wired into the system at that age, whether it's hooning around on a motorcycle or shovelling ecstasy pills down one's neck, and has little if anything to do with the quality of their upbringing. To rejoice at their demise seems a little harsh.

And their families are for ever going to be tormented by the endless promise and possibilities that their lives could have held. Rog

However not all graffiti is like that. Just upstream from here there is a long blank wall ....which is now a huge advert for Dean's Tugs? that was offensive Ross

I stated that some graffiti brightened up drab dingy walls..no way can my house be described as having drab and dingy walls..I've poured thousands into renovating her...and further more the death of any young men is tragic for their families no matter what section of society they come from...I also stated that I didn't like all graffiti which I don't...I hate the scrawled messy disgusting posts as much as anyone else. I guess being a nurse(retired I know) I have empathy for people no matter what their background..if I didn't I wouldn't have been able to care for down and outs/homeless/addicts/criminals...

I detest the "taggers" and the eyesore they make of some areas and I abhor the scrawls you see on rolling stock. However not all graffiti is like that. Just upstream from here there is a long blank wall, facing the river that has several excellent bits of very clever artwork along it. .... That is also graffiti but it is obviously by someone who is an artist and it certainly does not detract from anything but adds quite a lot. That actual graffiti artist was spotted by the owner of this drydock who got him to come and do a mural on the front wall of the dock. Having seen the other ones up stream I wouldn't say it's his best work but it's bright and colourful and stops the place looking like a fading shadow of previous times. The guy deserves the title "artist" SAM_1427 by mudlarker2, on Flickr SAM_1426 by mudlarker2, on Flickr SAM_1425 by mudlarker2, on Flickr SAM_1424 by mudlarker2, on Flickr this reply is a bit late as I was way laid when I went out to take the photos Compare and contrast this to the photos John posted. It looked like this 16 odd years ago. Courtesy of the Tuesday Night Club. www.tuesdaynightclub.co.uk/Tour_02/Frog%20Westbridge%20UNene.html

It looks gorgeous.
Unless there's bodies in the garden, there's no horror there.
Mug of tea (or even something stronger) on that bench seems idyllic.

Yes, nice house Patty, but I was saying you don't want spotty teenage thugs come round at night and spray their tags all over it. Graffiti can be artistic - often better than Van Gogh, Turner and Picasso - but in the right place - not all over brand new buildings, buses, trains, cars, statues, gravestones. The new bridge at Elland (opened July 2016) has already got some right shitty scummy mumblings daubed all over it. Pathetic and pointless vandalism by juvenike delinquents. But nobody is arguing with that. All that has been said is that the loss of life in the Loughborough incident is sad and regrettable, and not something in which a reasonable and well-balanced person would find reason to gloat.

One of them might be a Banksy, then your house will be worth squillions. Noreen got a commission to paint a wall in Rochdale, in the underpass between Touchstones Gallery and Asda car park. It's the canal related one if anyone visits. Ironically is was done in acrylic then coated with clear epoxy so that any graffitti can be cleaned off without damaging the work underneath. As for the rest of it, tagging etc, to quote S Milligan, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, get it out with optrex."
