He's gay, he has always had certain mannerisms which have marked him out as different from his peers and would fit the stereotypical view of a gay man if you have a childs view of the world. As a result of those mannerisms he was bullied mercilessly by his peers for being gay before he even knew what sexuality was. Now he is older and does appreciate sexuality it hasnt changed the fact that the names he was called and the beatings he got were bullying. If that's the case I'm glad I grew up in 1980's Northamptonshire! I think 2000's Gwynedd could give 1850's Northamptonshire a run for its money.

been reading that exchange with interest.
As a product of a boarding school education, bullying is something I have observed on many occasions. Occasionally as a victim but more often as a witness, keeping quiet and being thankful that it was someone else getting it. It without doubt had effects on my development, some hopefully for the good, others less so. It has left me, even now, as a now elderly adult, with an abiding dislike of bullying. Not so much from what happened to me but more from a sense of guilt for the occasions when as a spectator, I didn't intervene but just kept quiet, afraid to attract attention in case I became the next victim.
Children can be intensely tribal and will look for anything that distinguishes "their" group from "others" it doesn't have to be sexuality it can be anything from accent to crooked teeth.

The only time I've had my sexuality under scrutiny was May 2000, I was working at a place called Sauermanns near a small gaff called Pornbach in ze fatherland. At the time I worked alongside a powerfully built West Indian 20 years my senior. We had gone to sort some snagging on a new rotational moulding machine, the conservative people of Bavaria didn't know what to make of a black guy and his young protege - they all assumed we were a pair of benders looking for a bit of solitude amongst the Germans!!! It was OK in the factory as it was obvious we worked together, less so in restaurants and at the hotel that was our digs! Had some proper sideways looks and it was clear we were the topic of discussion amongst other guests and dinners. Shame neither of us spoke any German. My mate reckoned he had never felt so awkward in all his life, this coming from a guy who suffed all sorts of racist shit growing up in 60's and 70's Britain. He vowed and declared if we got anymore work down there he wasn't going back with me

I thought I had heard all of the different names but "bender" is a new one for me. Mind you it doesn't sound as anywhere as offensive as a lot of the common ones, that this being a free and open forum I could mention or list here, but decorum wont let me to do so. "Bender" was a fairly common term to describe homosexuals back in the 1970s, but I haven't heard it used for decades. I seem to recall it being comedic rather than hateful. As for "bender" the serrated and curled frankfurter sausage, that was, and I believe still is, a mainstay of Wimpy restaurants, although one assumes that it was so named before "bender" picked up its alternative connotation to describe an uphill gardener.

As I said before this is joskin central so its is de rigeur for the infantile round here.

Gestapo at the picture house wouldn't let me in without ID! it was to see Fight Club, had to wait for it to come out on DVD and get it from fucking BlockBusters!!! Not so much of an issue these days, 18 years of Mrs Grumpy and 2 of the dwarf are taking their toll

At school I was bullied a bit or a lot in some cases, I left school joined the ARMY, did my SAS course, came back to the village and pasted all the bullies that had ganged up on me. The last one was funny his mum opened the door saw it was me and asked to take him out into the garden to sort him!! as I left she said he had it coming and he had been scared to leave the house for days. Now I realise it is petty revenge but at the time these gangs made my life and others a living hell! At a school reunion years later we all had to go in our works clothes made me smile how the "gang" avoided me like the plague petty yes enjoyable at the time yes and no regrets
