I seem to recall there was an issue which revolved around the gurkas being unable to enter and also about the fact that their army pension was way off the pension that home grown boys get. Joanne Lumley is the one to ask about this as she has been a very active campaigner for Gurkas rights. Phil

Yes, I read in Private Eye over 5 years ago that the British Government treats Gurkas like dirt. Who are these Government members who refuse to pay the Gurkas fairly? Names please. Now an idea: Tony Blair and an underpaid Gurka in the same room. Only one is allowed to emerge alive...

I have served with Gurkas on numerous occasions great lads most settle back to their home where they are rich men. Some however want to settle here which then becomes a problem as the pension is not up to the job here

I dont know to be honest as the Nepalese restaurant I go to is owned by an ex Gurkha so clearly some do come here but most go back to Nepal where they are normally very well off

I'm not quite sure why all Gurkhas should be given residency in the UK as a matter of course (as some eg JL) suggest. It would be a bit like having a job for some years and then expecting to retire and live in the boss's house. Was it in their contract when they signed up? I don't think so.

I thought it had all been sorted under Gordon Browns time.
Taken from the wiki Gurkha Justice Campaign Following a Commons Home Affairs Committee meeting in which talks were held between campaigners, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office on 19 May, Gordon Brown announced to the House of Commons on 20 May that the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith would make a statement on the issue the following day.[14] Smith subsequently announced that all Gurkha veterans who had served four years or more in the British Army before 1997 would be allowed to settle in Britain.[15]
This is now in line with all Gurkha's after 1997 can also settle
