Have you been to your boat recently Nick and have you ventured onto the Crinan yet ? assuming of course your still in Aberdeen. On the boat on the Caldon canal at the moment. The Crinan is not really a narrowboat canal. It's also very short so I'm not sure it would warrant a hire (if such a thing is available). But mostly, it annoys me that you are not allowed to work the locks, it all has to be arranged with Scottish Canals so you are permanently on a schedule. might be worth a visit by road, but it is a 9 hour round trip from Aberdeen.
You do work the locks yourself on the Crinan, except for the sea locks at each end, so 12 out of the 14 locks if memory serves me right. It's a nice canal, but a road runs along it for the whole length, so visiting by car is a good option
Your comments are correct for the Forth and Clyde canal. That regime, where a Scottish Canals crew turns up in a minibus to operate each lock for you, puts me off from ever venturing there.

[quote author=" haulierp " source="/post/12527/.I had a lovely house in Norfolk once and spent most of my time driving back to London or even Milton Keynes for my equilibrium, seduction and mental wellbeing, too rural I am afraid. Dont you mean to see your dealer? How did you know he needed a new car? I really wish he would just PM me,why bore everyone to death, he is so Provincial. Its like when you go off to University meet a stockbrokers daughter from Surrey and bring her back to your hometown and introduce her to the halfwits you grew up with. John Osbourne touched on it back in the day with one of those "kitchen sink" screenplays.

Oh well that's good to know. But if you can work the locks on the Crinan, why not on the F&C? Bloody SC.

I'm not the one who's first post back was a personal attack. So fuck you.

It's a bit weird. The boater's transiting the Crinan will typically be experienced yachtsmen or fishermen, although there is a good chance that many of them, particularly the Scandinavian yachtsmen, will never have seen a manual lock before. In contrast, I understand that the majority of F&C traffic are hireboats.
As the Scottish Canals are still nationalised, its probably wee control freak Nicola making sure that nothing happens without her say so... It's nice to be able to say that here!

The moorings survey and the word "London" serve a purpose for CRT. London will draw in the interest, and views Crt seek. Some of you are easily conned. It's a national project, and will be rolled out across the system. Social cleansing, pure and simple.

Unfortunately some people can't see the wood for the trees. They would rather attack me personally rather than deal with the issues.

I have it from a very reliable source, that you only "put" up with boating because it's your partner's chosen pastime. As for everyone buying a Hudson, I can see these being the first to lose considerable values, given they won't get past the marina exit owing to lack of depth.

Obviously not that reliable a source then! No, it was me who first went canal boating aged 8 (friend's dad's boat), was exploring the BCN aged 12, boated regularly on said friend's boat + our family hire boat holidays until I went to Uni, then introduced Jeff to canals about 22 years ago borrowing said friend's boat (by now a newish narrowboat) for 2 weeks every year until finally we bought our own boat 5 years ago. So I'd say we both equally like boating, perhaps one difference is I also have gliding and flying to fit in, and quite enjoy sailing which Jeff hates.

I'd replied to survey but I think £25 is greedy, I'm also in the c***v*n club and basic farm sites cost £15 ish, with a hook up, cassette disposal, toilet and maybe a shower. £10 or £15 at most for a mooring I already contributed to.

So it looks like there are lots of people happy to pay twice for something.

Unfortunately some people can't see the wood for the trees. They would rather attack me personally rather than deal with the issues. If you care to read through every thread on this forum where you have argued with a poster, there isn't one where you either haven't irked someone with the use of profanity against someone else or alternately attacked them in person. Can I say again, there is no issue ,only supposition over what CRT will or will not do.Can I ask a serious question of you,do you expect that CRT will extort a charge for every foot of towpath in the land so that every time you moor it will be £25.What will the position be with other users such as hire companies,do I hire a boat and pay £25 every night on top of what I have paid the Hire Company for the boat ? Please don't denigrate the post by calling me Fuckwit, just concentrate on those CRT issues I raise with you, please.
