relieved to get some good news about the old Volvo. The latest warning message re-set and has stayed so after a test drive and it is believed to be a fairly easy problem to fix if it does comes back. bits ordered for the other fault (which is not critical at the moment) and not hugely costly, so the "Grandad's Armchair" looks like it might continue to cause pollution for a bit longer I put the Torque app on my android phone, connected the car with a Β£10 Bluetooth dongle, could check and wipe errors codes. Worked a treat till I had a problem with the abs sensor, that is controlled by a second ECU. In the end I bought a proper hand held machine for about Β£75 that will read everything.

Bright and sunny in Barmouth today. Fresh easterly blowing against a big incoming tide made it a bit of a hair raising escape out to sea on the kayak. Tide running close to 4 knots which is a rough match for the top speed of the kayak. 5 minutes of furious paddling amongst the tossing waves I'd moved 50 yards and out of the grip of the tide.

To be honest Jim, I am passed that stage of my life when I am willing/able to do my own car mechanicing and the very helpful chap in the garage, literally just over the road from the boat, prices his work sensibly.

Buy car, drive car till it stops working, buy another car. My motto has worked well over the years. Well my last couple of car buys have not quite worked like that... Buy car decide its too small/not suitable part ex for Larger car that then 'kissed' a bollard and required x 2 doors, a wheel and part of a bumper decide too big so sell.... Buy small soft top car..don't use.. mould and mildew grows through the interior ... Buy Large white wolfy dog Dog does not fit into small soft top mildew ridden car so Part ex small car for Larger car........ dog fits ok but The technology is at a ridiculous level....tells me I have my foot off the accelerator..or is it on?..what does it want me to do? Tells me I'm not driving between the lines Tells me to shut the windows I just know this car and I will not be long term friends... I'd like not to have a car but realistically accept for now, I need one.. I have not quite got the right car at the right time

Buy car, drive car till it stops working, buy another car. My motto has worked well over the years. I generally run cars until they die, I am not averse to certain types of repairs and consider that just consumable parts.
I work my vehicles but I treat them with respect and don't thrash them and I find generally my cars last me a long time.
my Astra van bought second hand with about 90,000 on the clock eventually went to meet the great scrapyard in the sky with 298,000 miles on the clock still on the original engine/gearbox/clutch and still actually running well when it went (alternator/starter/battery/heater matrix all went at the same time.
The Astra estate that replaced it was taken in exchange for an unpaid bill and again 250,000 miles (about 150,00 under my ownership) when multiple faults caused me to part with it
The Volvo was in very good nick and very cheap thanks (to the good offices of a forum member)
A few minor faults (faulty window wind mechanism and faulty door lock on back door) but a lot of miles now into it's 3rd year and only a set of brake pads, a set of tyres and a battery down
Far better to repair (the quite cheap repair this time) and continue to enjoy driving a very comfortable Swedish tank

1 x 320w monocrystalline panel, Victron 100 MPPT controller and the Victron app all up and running, with five new service batteries also installed. Definitely recommend Tom Malone (Malone electrical solar services) if anyone needs work ...very neat and tidy and a great chap to deal with. We'll see how it goes ... but we cruised out of Braunston to a quiet spot, having run the engine an hour at most, and in a sunny spot with the panel tilted, we're getting the same power through the solar as we were with the engine running Quite bizarre! Rog Max from 320w is about 22A so your engine charging must be pretty crap! I get 90A on half power from our engine. If you have the MPPT on Bluetooth connected to the app, make sure you have changed the default password.

Rog Thanks for the recommendation - not heard about him thus far. However, can't believe you have FIVE leisure batteries and a solar panel and you read by the light of a few fairies in a whisky bottle.....?

That would be great ... but to be fair I hope it does for everyone ... it is still only August and I have another six weeks of boating before work begins.

Well I received a delivery of one very lovely woman and two equally lovely children today. They arrived by express train from de la France.
Upon receipt of said packages I safely installed them in an appropriate residential unit and returned to one of my vessels to execute ongoing social distancing protocols.
All safe and sound. The kids have grown in a month specially the older one who is 11.
And I'm like "how tall??"
Probably have the kids on Dulcinea for the weekend and irritate the varnish brigade at the trad boat rally by going up and down brandishing our torpedoes and multiple rocket launchers.
