Bored, bored, bored...
Even started thinking about a day trip to Preston tomorrow, until I looked at the best attractions...
No1 - The first KFC in the UK - now I know I'm a fan but not that much... No2 - The second largest bus station in Europe - Hmmn, isn't that an interesting fact... No3 - The rail station - best way to get out of town... No4 - A road bollard that goes up and down and causes cars to crash into it.........
Think I might just take a walk down the locks and throw some rotten tomatoes at the CRT guys!

1 x 320w monocrystalline panel, Victron 100 MPPT controller and the Victron app all up and running, with five new service batteries also installed. Definitely recommend Tom Malone (Malone electrical solar services) if anyone needs work ...very neat and tidy and a great chap to deal with. We'll see how it goes ... but we cruised out of Braunston to a quiet spot, having run the engine an hour at most, and in a sunny spot with the panel tilted, we're getting the same power through the solar as we were with the engine running Quite bizarre! Rog Max from 320w is about 22A so your engine charging must be pretty crap! I get 90A on half power from our engine. If you have the MPPT on Bluetooth connected to the app, make sure you have changed the default password. Power going in will be much lower if the batteries are approaching full charge of course, regardless of the rating of the alternator.

Rog I only have 1x 175w, firstly because I only have two leisure batteries and secondly because I didn't want to fill the roof up with solar, but on a day like today it will power everything on the boat including the fridge which is a bit power hungry. Some back-of-the envelope maths suggests that I have saved around £200 in diesel since having it fitted. Additionally the batteries appear to be holding out well at a year old, normally that's about as long as they last.

I wasn't making a scientific factual report ... just commenting that in direct sunlight we were charging as if the engine was running Rog

Yes I suppose so, if you have lead acid batteries - which are so last century.

Yes I suppose so, if you have lead acid batteries - which are so last century. I would imagine that the overwhelming majority of vehicle and marine batteries produced are still lead acid, so not exactly "last century" like riding on a trolleybus, watching a Charlie Chaplin film at the cinema or looking up a phone number in the Yellow Pages. I think the price of lithium batteries would need to reduce by some way before lead acid technology becomes redundant.

We had a day in Preston as a day out when we were on the L&L 2 years ago...crap. I did like the RAF shop & bought a few bits/made a donation.Dad was in a Polish squadron & mum was a WAAF-that's how they met.Preston is not the best place for a day out...

I reckon it's just about there. The problem is more the initial outlay

Lifetime cost is similar, but running costs for live aboards who don’t cruise every day, much less. And it’s not appropriate to compare LA Ah with Li Ah.

All this talk of batteries and solar panels has me feeling like the poor relation again. Probably due to the lack of sun about at the moment... new batteries on with a little more capacity but still having to sit with the engine chugging (not moving cause we are here too early) for 3 hours a day to keep the freezer going. If I was young enough, I'd sell my body for a few weeks to finance a better solution - as it is, I'd be hard pressed to flog a kidney on ebay.
Anyway - moaning a side, I'm pleased for you dogless to have joined the 21st century... it's quite painless lol. Still, you are going to find yourself on hot sunny days unable to hide from the sun any more so maybe buy some airtex underpants ;-)
We moved into the noisier (but deeper) pound between 8 and 7 yesterday and judging by the continued choc-a-bloc ness further up, will stay here and have the guest walk down to meet us tomorrow. She's coming early than she should anyway so it'll help fill her time walking down the canal a bit... she's not frail so a mile with a back pack might make her think again about sneaking on an early train next time.
QUESTION:
We end this trip in Bedworth before going into Coventry basin (2 days later to collect the new folks) - I've heard disparaging reports on Bedworth ... do those in the know have any mooring recommendations near shops to make life easier or do we just take pot luck and hope for the best?
