Anyway ... ordered two Dunelm swivel chairs to replace the Wilson two seater settee. They're due to be delivered Tuesday whilst we're out for blacking. I'm sure Telemachus will refund us if we're not entirely happy with his recommendation Rog

pointless (adjective)
having little or no sense, use, or purpose -- as in :- closing up lock gates and paddles that are visibly and obviously leaking far more than those at the other end of the lock.
No. This is mathematically impossible. You are relying on people being able to judge the amount of leakage by eyeballing the lock after use. Most people can not do that. If they just leave gates open then there will be problems. I am an advocate of this approach but as others have said "we have what we have" and it is all fucked and the end of the world is going to be 23rd of August 2024. You are exhibiting the classic symptoms of someone seeing this from their own perspective with an innate inability to appreciate "the bigger picture". Whilst I agree with you and understand what you are saying it is too narrowly focused on a very specific point which is in danger of being laboured.

I know there is nothing difficult about it but you will have to believe me when I say most people can not do this.
It is outside of normal noddy boater behaviour patterns. Even though it is within the cerebral capability of most people it still won't actually happen.
It is difficult to understand but this is what is actually going on in the real world.
ETA the point being that if you tell people it is ok to leave the gates open in certain circumstances they will get lazy and leave them open in a CBA kind of way.
Better to tell people to close gates.
Also telling people to close gates is really handy as there is a fairly large but declining contingent of old school types who "get it" and it is a good plan to introduce some conflict "boater v boater" to divert attention from the fact nothing is getting done about excessively leaking lock gates.

They could be shown how to do it, . . in no more time than it takes to fill and empty a couple of locks that are leaking badly at opposite ends, . . and there's no shortage of leaking lock gates and paddles to choose from !

Bridgewater ! Crikey have you joined Sale Flying Club ? Last I read you'd got last eight of Wigan 21 to do. Rog I was thinking that too - Imagine the amount of folks that'll have been shouting "slow down" ... well, actually on the Bridgewater everyone zooms anyway. I DO hope you logged into the CRT booking page to declare your intended passage

Although I agree with you in theory, I think Andrew has the right of it .......... a spell in the retail trade made me fully understand this basic instruction "Never, ever, underestimate the stupidity of the general public"

It's a very, very simple rule to apply and follow ... and yet we all see instances where it's forgotten or ignored.
There seems little point railing against modern leisure boating ... that's where we are.
I'm sure the horse boaters were unhappy with the noisy, smelly engined boaters ... but time moves on and all things change.
