It began raining as we dropped down Gas locks into town yesterday at about 1.30pm.
It's never stopped and is of biblical proportions at present.
Hopefully dry tomorrow ☔️
At least we're not on a river.

Today's kayak tour was less hazardous than yesterday. River Wey lower non canalised section at Weybridge and a bit of the river Bourne. The former has a lovely ornate weir and the latter has something I have never seen before which is ten bridges (footbridges in gardens) in the space of a couple of hundred yards.

Rains gone, replaced with wind. Leaving the Ashby this morning and off passed the burial ground of several prostitutes.

Well the eye went quite red but not black. I doubt people would tend to believe it was a fight with a willow tree. But it was.

Dry and the sun is occasionally peeping out from the clouds ⛅️
Think we'll stay here today ... do some shopping before cruising on.
We still have plenty of time.

Just logged in to internet banking (Nationwide) and get this message.
"When we profit, we think you should too, so we are delighted to let you know that we are giving you £100. Sharing our profits through the Nationwide Fairer Share payment is one of our ways of rewarding you for choosing us. You don’t need to do anything. We will be sending payments between 13 and 28 June 2024 and you will need an open current account with us to receive yours. If you only have a joint bank account with us, we will send your payment there. You will get a text to let you know when it is in your account".
So that's me and Charlie's bike trip to the Peak District, Premier Inn for the night etc paid for.

I like the idea that the company shares the profits ... a simple enough idea but personally we've never encountered this with any other company 👍🏻

I like the idea that the company shares the profits ... a simple enough idea but personally we've never encountered this with any other company 👍🏻 Rog We don’t really use Nationwide for banking. Ali just kept the accounts open incase they ever changed from building society to a bank and floated, giving shares out to their members.. something like that anyway, shrewd one is my wife.

Ended up at Sutton Stop for tonight. Ali had been at home last few days and has come back aboard this evening. Was intending to cruise further but it’s flipping chilly out today. Have even popped a couple of small logs on the fire…

I like the idea that the company shares the profits ... a simple enough idea but personally we've never encountered this with any other company 👍🏻 Rog Nationwide is a mutual company. Also known as a cooperative. You might remember 30 or so years ago when some people were setting up as many mutual savings accounts as possible in the hope that they would sell out to the market. 'Carpet bagging' was the term for that. So, Nationwide is effectively owned by its members. The members being the account holders. Executives of course, make decisions as to the activities of the business. This 'profit share' by Nationwide is unusual. Generally, mutuallly owned finance houses keep profits in house to enable competitive rates of lending/ borrowing. Oddly perhaps, these rates can often be bettered by non-mutuals whose profits go to outside investing shareholders. A quick search just now of best savings rates reveals that none of them are offered by mutuals. Why this is the case would make an interesting study for a higher level student in the intricacies of differing demands of shareholders: private vs. mutual vs. public.
