The railway at Kemijärvi crossing the Kemi river. This railway comes from Rovaniemi and heads to Salla, freight only between Kemijärvi and Salla. After Salla the railway headed into Russia but the tracks have been cut and/or torn up. On road 965 between Savukoski and Salla we saw these snowy mountains of around 600 metres high, and realised they are in Russia. Taken from the bridge over the Kuolajoki (river): Just to the east of Salla the railway to the border with Russia, the rails cut at this level crossing: Info about this railway seems scarce, but I found articles which deal with consideration of rebuilding this railway so Finland has more access to China. Another possible railway regeneration is a line to Sodankylä and up to Kirkenes. Well, we had a nice day out, about 250 miles, and most of that above the Arctic Circle. Journey home tomorrow.

No photos from today as it was raining most of the way, and anyway, not a lot to take photos of. At Muhos, however, where the road to Tyrnävä crosses the railway, I did wonder if there were any trains about and using the app we saw there was one approaching Muhos! What a co-incidence! So we stopped and I just got the camera up in time to film the barriers coming down and the train passing. I think it was less than 10 seconds between the barriers coming down and the train passing, which I think is a ridiculously short time - any vehicle stuck on the crossing is toast before you have time to phone to the signalman! Might post this later... sauna first. 1799 kilometres covered, that's 1,124 miles. The only damage we dun is I ran over a vole near Kiutaköngäs; its children are probably still waiting for it to return home. I would drive all the way back if I could reverse time and events. Sorry, vole!

A very short cruise today, rugeley to brindleys aquaduct, about 30 mins. Loaded the boat up with new batteries, which I will fit tomorrow and clothes & food for next weekend when we head for the caldon. I might have forgotten I am supposed to go home and not stay on the boat, drank a few beers and now can’t drive, I am sure hitler parry will understand and not want me to get picked up by the po po..

I've had a similar problem with the whole beer situation. Arrived at boat with car. Moved boat and had some beer. Now unable to drive legally so have opted to stay night on boat illegally as the punishment for this is likely to be less severe than drink driving. Of course the thought of killing a pedestrian or cyclist filled me with anxiety so I had a bit more beer just to quell my worries which had the effect of making it even more illegal to drive the car.

We've had those crisps ... pretty damned good too, but being hot they make you want more beer ... and more beer makes you want more crisps The Polish deli in Ellesmere is shut down. Used the laundry ... very good as always but you need coins as it is unmanned. Think we'll turn back next week and leave the Welsh to their own devices. Can't get a clear answer so we'll decide for ourselves. Rog

Here's a thought: what if you go boating for the day, you intended to drive home (or walk/cycle home?) but your slipped disc went again and you have difficulty even walking, or you can't bend to do up your shoelaces? Or you just feel ill and have to take to bed overnight?

Gonna be a wet cruising day today, rain forecast for most of it so out comes the waterproofs...
Have to be in stone for tomorrow to get train back to pick up car..
After our week on the caldon I think I might turn right and head a little further north, shuffle the boat around a bit , maybe see if the welsh let us in and have a go on that big old lift bridge thing, maybe even drop onto the weaver for some river action.
Also thinking of looking for a cheap winter mooring up that way, getting bored of the Ashby.

Just stay in the boat, it’s all about being sensible, even crt want us to be able to stay on the boat, it’s the government that have the rule in place.

All these folk moaning about "not being able to stay on their boats" over night yet should just do it under the radar... no one will know...
like the "original" lockdown in Skipton - people did their own thing ... subtlety and the world didn't end.
EVERYONE has taken to keeping 2 metres away from each other so does it really matter if a few folk stay over night on their boats? - I think not. I doubt even if anyone walking the towpath would give a second thought to dobbing you in anyway - without exception, everyone we've chugged past in this pound is really pleased to see boats out and about again...
Sometimes, we should just find our own way to work "within the rules" like a trip to Barnard Castle - ... If I can't complete my pennines escape next weekend, I may begin digging my own canal
