I admit to being an electrical dimbo but can an internally regulated alternator be further regulated with an external regulator? Yes, it can. Sterling does it, but not very well.

I admit to being an electrical dimbo but can an internally regulated alternator be further regulated with an external regulator? Yes but normally only upwards from the basic regulating voltage, if the internal regulator is left in circuit. Of course any alternator can be hacked to remove the internal regulator and replace it with an external one. Which is what I’m going to do, except it will be an external regulator of my own design.

Many older engines had alternators with external regulators, could you adapt your alternator in this way? If you could then it should be easy to find a suitable regulator. they have external regulators that are easy to remove finding ones that charge at 13.8 is the issue.

Ohm my god kris is sending compliments to nick what the heck ? It's "Vote Nadin vote often" time. Though some of the rather offhand comments aren't very encouraging. Maybe kris knows who's voted and that's reflected in posts?

Though I have voted for Kriss, and Thunderboater votes I hope will provide him a good base to start from, I doubt votes from here would make much difference to the outcome. Who knows?
