On the night of the sinking, a sister ship to 'Marchioness', and another ex-Salter's steamer, the 'Hurlingham', with equally bad rearward visibility, was also out on a virtually identical schedule and was overtaken, safely and without incident, by the 'Bowbelle' just moments before hitting the 'Marchioness'. Except that Hurlingham did not have restricted visibility astern. Totally different helm layout as you can see in these pictures I stole off the internet. Hurlingham (on the left) has a higher wheelhouse with much more glass than Marchioness (on the right). It was established that the skipper of the Marchioness could not see directly behind from helm position. I think the Hurlingham skipper can. This does make a material difference to outcomes. 3 boats all going the same direction on the same course, The Marchioness rear view obscured by the Hurlingham (another party boat with bright lights?) Hurlingham has good rear view and no lights to see past so gets out of the way? Marchioness hit "moments later".

There is a TSS scheme in the Thames already, its the part about leaving other traffic to port. No I meant Tony's suggestion that a certain part of the River would be left clear in case of a large commercial movement through the bridges, at the "tide time" he referred to. This could in theory work but it could have a counterproductive effect in that skipper's of larger boats might tend to assume the way is clear and keep even less of a lookout.

I think they have been trying to enforce that for some time ..... it must irk them considerably that from outside of their "separation" he still manages to cause them grief

The one thing CWDF is good on ... banning Rog CWDF is also good for letting prats post complete bollocks especially in the political threads. My ignore list gets longer by the day on there.

Just go for the entire forum on ignore ... you and everyone else can say what they wish here ... no teacher's approval. I get frustrated with the odd poster ... mildly annoyed even ... but a small price to pay for freedom Rog
