I think the intention was to help people whose licences are up for renewal now, many of whom will currently be on reduced incomes. They then joined a few dots and realised it would be unfair to grant concession only to those whose licences happened to expire this month, so gave it to everyone. I think it’s the usual, not thought through properly knee jerk reaction from cart. If people’s incomes are reduced for a prolonged time, then one months licence fee isn’t going to make any difference. Is it an example of corporate virtue signaling? I’m sure there is an element of virtue signalling, but equally they can only deal with the facts as known at the moment. We don’t as yet know how long enforced closures of businesses will go on for, but there are signs that there will be some relaxation in the fairly near future (well, I certainly hope so anyway!). Perhaps if the full lockdown continues for another month, they will add another month. Who knows. I am sure they don’t know! I imagine it is in part a sop to government policy which is that tenants shouldn’t be evicted for non payment of rent during the CV crisis.

Which is perculiar given that cart keep trying to claim they are not a landlord. If that was the intention, just say no one will lose their boat whilst the situation is on going. Then we will look at structured payment plans afterwards. It’s not that difficult and I’m sure it will only be a percentage of license customers that are effected by this.

It’s not well written by I think they mean the expiry of everyone’s licence will be extended for a month. Less clear whether this will be a free month, or whether the old expiry date will resume at the subsequent renewal. Ie current validity period now 13 months, next and subsequent 12 months, vs current period now 13 months, next 11 months. Yes, but I don’t understand the reasoning behind it. How does it help the situation? Or people in a difficult situation at the min? I got a reminder to re-new next month ............. confused now ................

They are going to review in a month and maybe add another free month. Not because they're trying to help peoples finances but because they can't use their boats. Most boats are not owned by live aboards. It's amusing that they are also encouraging people to renew anyway. Fat chance!

How remarkable, . . it takes a Corona Virus pandemic to make those delightful people at C&RT think twice about charging for something that they're not providing, and to finally start complying with the legislation by which they are governed, . . but have consistently either ignored or abused since this apology for a navigation authority came into being nearly 8 years ago.
First, they begin by complying, for the very first time in their sickening history, with the provisos in the 1995 Act with regard to not enforcing the '14 day rule' when circumstances dictate that the requirement is temporarily removed, . . and now they announce that they won't be penalizing boaters for not re-licensing their boats on a waterway system that they have now been provided with an excuse for closing down completely.

Did anyone else see CRTs publicity drive on BBC NorthWest in the news this evening?
Filmed around Burnley, Greenhalgh encouraging everyone to use the towpath - lots of interviews of smiling folk amazed they had this wonder right on their doorstep. Footage of a 4ft towpath with bikes passing walkers - he did say they are asking cyclists to slow down a bit as there has been a 300% increase in towpath traffic since the lockdown.....

I read the missive and understood it, glad that someone has given us something, I do wonder if we will get a second month, but suspect we will. I have heard that CRT have furloughed staff so costs have gone down for them along with maintenance, which we know wont go away. Will grass cutting happen I wonder? maybe not as the grass around here has been worn away!!!

The clue is in the word 'lockdown'. Now apparently we might have no immunity to this virus even if we've had it. How desperate are they? Meanwhile I get silly pop up's by ProBoards.

I've emailed them to instruct them not to extend mine. The boat's on the water, so I've no argument about paying the fee. I have suggested that it was a "nice gesture", but I'd be more impressed if Parry and his directors took a 12 month 25% pay cut.

It's actually quite a shrewd move by CRT. A large number of boat licences are renewed during February and March, thus missing the annual increase on the first of April. Moving the license forward (and asking those who can afford it to donate the money back), will catch the march renewals and give the trust a potential boost somewhere in the region of a quarter of a million quid.
Edit to add, I did have the boat renewal figures from when we were playing with roving mooring permits, but I can't find them at the moment.

Rubbing it in boaters faces also, don't move your boat unless needed... walkers do what you want. The bloke at the end who said he needs to get out the house as he doesn't have a garden, walk the streets, that what we are doing, its not about having a lovely view on your daily walk, its about getting an hours movement in..

To be fair life is about compromise. We can pick a mooring where we will guarantee seeing no one ... but we want access to shops and facilities. So we picked a mooring with a wide towpath, about a mile out of the houses ... means it's a long walk lugging shopping, but a lot less busy on the towpath than the embankment in town. Of course we have to walk past peoples houses to go shopping ... some with no front gardens so we're quite close ... like some are to our boat ... but if the virus can get through steelwork or a brick wall, we're all stuffed Rog
