I think you should research what “defunding the police” actually means.

No, it's about a minority group trying to take over a majority group and change the world order. This is interesting: uk.gofundme.com/f/ukblm-fund?fbclid=IwAR3fWIH2EfG-b39q02uxCK14wX9zn2DfuHo6ybx4CyN1xXj6QwGNaV7JhScQueer people still exist, apparently. An assumption is made that other marginalised groups will automatically benefit. That's one hell of an assumption, given that the required changes are for the benefit of black people, and black people only. How much do you support this, would you see justice if your possessions and you future was taken from you at some time in the future, as this suggests, would you support this? that local communities should do their own policing which would stop violence. Love and Peace, that's all you need. What will they do when the trucks carrying food stop driving into Seattle? I can see an Animal Farm here: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8409067/Trump-says-domestic-terrorists-taken-Seattle-demands-CHAZ-retaken.html Also: "BLM cancels rally in London". So, it would appear they're not really that committed to the cause. Oh dear. (all news outlets).

One of the aims claimed was stopping intervention in domestic disputes ...... oh wow !! (TV interview on Al Jazeera)
reducing expenditure on hi tech resources such as bodycams I suppose that makes it easier to claim it was the fault of the police
and incidentally there is a varying level of demand up to complete scrapping of municiple police forces

After your posting of this, I have been doing a bit of reading up and also looking at BLM aims ...... it is quite a terrifying list, I don't think that a large number of people who support it would do so if they were fully aware of it's aims.
The one that is the most worrying is the "defunding of the police" which works on the idea (mad bloody nightmare more like) that local communities should do their own policing which would stop violence. Bloody Nora !!! Just think that one through !!! I have also noticed that there are plenty of reports of a huge peak in gun sales in the USA edition.cnn.com/2020/03/19/business/coronavirus-gun-sales/index.html 77% according to CNN, tripled according to NY Times.
Maybe they have read the prospectus ........ hmmmm !!!
Jeez can you imagine the scroat problems without police !!!
The scroats will be the police

Well if you are taking your reference from some random nutter on Al Jazeera then I'm sure you are right.
The original point related to the US and was to decrease the amount police forces spent on military grade equipment and divert those funds to social interventions such as drug and alcohlol abuse treatments, convice rehabilitation etc. Defund as in reduce funding, not as in eliminate funding. And anyway, the whole US policing system is pretty weird to our eyes so a major reform would be a good thing.
No doubt there are a few bandwagon-jumping nutters over here, and of course the media loves to give these people air time just to enrage people like you.

I am queer and the statue of Baden Powell does not offend me, I do not even think of it in an historical context with lessons to be learned. The statue was erected for the movement he started, end of. Incidentally people on here have made homophobic remarks, so what, as long as you do not direct them at me then I am not offended, even if you did I am thick skinned. 😀 I found this week that I am racist too and have been self flagellating to make up for shame. I thought I was accepting of all races and creeds, perhaps I have been conditioned to be accepting due to the political correct society we are told we all live in. My recent discovery was after I took delivery of a large item from a guy, who was as black as the provable, when I saw him I did not think any thoughts racism, no hate, he IS black and I AM white. Whilst chatting he was talking about abusive customers who were not happy with customer service to which he said "I am thick skinned". In that brief moment I laughed at this remark, but was thinking deep inside, with skin that colour you must be, and he know it, so fell a uncomfortable silence. IMO a statue for whatever is part of our history and I am pissed off with all these people trying to strip us of the past. We are living in strange times, perhaps I am too old to identify/understand these people. J P Rowling is getting a lot of flack at the moment from being honest whilst at the same time being respectful; I respect her/any ones right to free speech. I would imagine the flack is coming from the same 'type' of person who 'hate' the statues they are tearing down, there I go again judging, such is the human condition. I love boating, getting about the country seeing places I would never have seen, talking to people, the camaraderie with other boaters. For once I am glad to be nearly 60 years old with life experiences, good and bad, I feel sorry for today's young 'snowflakes' who will never experience the complexities of life, judging again.

He was one of a panel that had been selected by the station for an in depth investigation into the BLM movement,
Al Jazeera has a (deserved) reputation for accuracy in reporting.
The "random nutter" was a Toronto based journalist.
I think you ought to do a bit of reading up ....... it's a bit different from what it appears to be on the surface and there are some very nasty political undercurrents. For example you might support the Labour party but Militant Tendency are a different matter.
This is the same ...... extremists should always be opposed
Sorry ....... crossposted with jubjub's excellent post

When I received the letter addressed to Mr Nigg Nogg it made me laugh. I found it funny. Genuinely funny.
I don't know if anyone else got the same letter but I do wonder how many people would be instantly offended and how many would have a chuckle.

When I lived overseas I was often referred to in derogatory terms. I used to call myself that derogatory term, everyone smiled, everyone laughed, not a problem at all.

J P Rowling is getting a lot of flack at the moment from being honest J K - from what I gather, she was 'one of them' until she said something to make them turn on her: "JK liked a tweet. That was all that was needed for the woke mob to descend." This would be the J K Rowling who: "conned the public by writing the same best selling kids book eight or nine times and just retitling them and getting a new gaudy cover for them"

Ah that's interesting. My older daughter was complaining just today about reading "the same old Harry potter again and again". I never investigated it but it adds up now.
A bit scammy really.

What posed me off about that was the tosser Daniel Radcliffe who clearly hasn’t got any work at the moment and is desperately trying to stay in the limelight, slagging off the hand that originally fed him just to get attention. Nasty!

There will always be nutters getting on a bandwagon if you look hard enough - or in this case not very hard.

That's the problem ... the actual issue gets swamped by other stuff ... people promoting their own causes.

No, I wan't aware of that but I would like to meet whomever nominated Kitchener's statue. I doubt it is in any danger, but it appears there is a credible threat to that of Baden-Powell. I liked one of Bodger's suggestions (just for a change) - put them all in a museum. It would be a fantastic way of educating the ignorant about the often-inglorious history of the empire. His statue his being temporary removed because campaigners who have accused him of racism, homophobia and support for Adolf Hitler. Even though he did massive work against racism with scouts, 15000 people have signed a petition to save it and until its removed the police are going to protect it. Yes, I read that story. Also, his biographer has spoken out and essentially says that all the things he is accused of are either lies or distortions (que surprise) although his military career is somewhat chequered. I hope so, Baden-Powell was one of those figures I was supposed to admire when I was young.
