It is a well known fact kris that only posh people EVER where raffia hats ... res ipsa loquitur ... what can I say ... hoisted by his own petard which is a nautical expression I suspect @magnetman will be enthusiastic about Rog I imagine he will explain the entomological origins of the expression him being the recipient of a “proper” education and all.

84 seems to be the norm with my lot though Chris's mum made it to 96 but we don't share genes. The oldest person I knew was an old lady of 106 who still lived at home and she was as sharp as a pin, when I called for her milk money she always had it spot on. She used to complain to me about her longevity saying it wasn't right that a woman should outlive her children but she did. She also said she was tired/bored with living so long . I believe she made her 108 year in a nursing hone . RIP Rose Phil

phil70, That sounded like my Aunty Amy (same ages) She was always my favourite Aunty. Mother's side were long lived, She 97, her sisters 87, 90 and 108. Grandmother 99. Aunty Amy's son is now getting near 90 (and still riding his motorbikes) ..... I have hopes, although my Father's family tree doesn't look as good.

It was the spill chuckers fault etymological is what I meant. I've read the book....3 times and I don't remember any of it...reckon takes a posh brain to inwardly digest and retain wot it says.. I've also got a hat similar to MM but I still don't make the 'posh' state... there must be another quality that has passed me by....

Which side of the cruise liner was your cabin on going out and which side coming back? That's the deciding factor for poshness.

Whilst the phrase was first coined by Old Bill the beloved Bard of Avon, I understood that it was largely used as a nautical expression from the days of sail when small explosive devices were used in close quarter sea battles. A 'throw away' comment anyway ... it was the poshness of the raffia hat that prompted me to post originally Rog

Yes I tend to agree Rog the raffia hat is a dead giveaway.
