When I was originally looking at the engine installation I was considering a Baudin or a 6LW, but when you cost out buying a second hand lump, having it fully overhauled getting a gearbox to match, then buying all the ancillaries, exhaust, instruments, morse controls and cables, skin fittings and weed filter, engine mounts, batteries, etc etc. When you added the whole lot together there was very little difference in cost to a brand new Daewoo, which came with all these bits (plus a toolkit, boilersuit and cap ) So it was really a no-brainer

If I went back to a narrowboat I would like an engine room and an old engine, I would happily lose the space for the beauty of an old RN or its like

In the foreground is the 8 litre 6 cyl lump in Sabina ........ it might not be a "pretty" engine but it's a heck of a lot more powerful and brand new cost a heck of a lot less than that diddy little thing SAM_0173 by mudlarker2, on Flickr your engine room looks good John, a working engine room. In my opinion though it would look better with a six cylinder Gardner sat there. But that's just my opinion. Obviously you didn't look closely enough to notice the sorry state of his ladder. This has been brought to John's attention on other occasions and he keeps saying he will paint the ladder, but so far it has apparently been all talk and no action.

I have spent most of today trying to get my new Lorenz chart plotter to accept the NMEA inputs from my old Garmin GPS instead of forking out for a new Lorenz "smart" aerial at some 200 smackeroos ....... I think the Garmin is just too old and is using a much earlier language. My Navman GPS will talk to it but I don't really want to use that as it has had a hard life (and sometimes the screen illumination just dies ....... which makes you wonder what else is on it's last legs)
Sigh, ...... I suppose I will just have to bite the bullet and buy the proper thing.

Just phoned up the dealers and I was right with the cost .....£192 including Vat ......... Oh well I suppose I shall just have to open my wallet and repeat "help yourself" there is no getting away from it, boats are an expensive hobby .....sigh !!!!

I like good old engines as well but some old engines arnt worth a light and are best being recycled into baked bean tins!!

I did extensive cruising in a 55ft Nb with a RN DM2 which I lived on from 1996 to 2007. Covered most of the canal system with it.
Nice engine but I definitely agree with kris' first comment about wanting another cylinder or two. It was a nice kerdump-kerdump sound and I could start it with the handle in warmer weather but a DM3 or 4 (there are some 4's about) would have been more relaxing.
Nice units but £18k is silly.
When I re-powered my barge I put a new Beta Kubota 90 in it. Big Gardner (eg 5LW) would have been nicer but not enough took in the engine 'ole and the boat is modern anyway.

On second look (Prolly not as looking at it it seems to be in a narrow boat!!) L3 means 3 litres per cylinder so its a 12 litre lump.
I think the dutch barge I mentioned has a 4LW not an L3 as it has two castings for the heads rather than 4 individual ones like the L2 and L3 units.
