Regarding self serve tills ... if we (customers) don't use them, they will be binned.
And yet I see people queuing to serve themselves ...I suppose we get what we deserve.

If nobody volunteered to do it they wouldn’t be able to replace them! The problem these days, Is there’s loads out there who will step forward, hand up shouting ‘me sir, I’ll do it’. There is no solidarity any more. Always weirdos who like to play at canal bargees of the 19th Century, and dress up in bizarre clothes.

Are you expecting a reply? I wouldn't. This though, would be guaranteed a reply. Dear CRT I read with dismay that your organisation is considering replacing your paid staff at Harecastle Tunnel. If I may explain: I'm a single parent with 3 children at school. Life is one big struggle at the moment. The government's 'eat out to help out' scheme has been a great help but it ends next week. It shouldn't end, this is discriminating against me and my family. I can't cook so if the scheme ends I'll be forced into sending my children to the kebab shop instead. It's so expensive there and the owners, very unfairly, don't give any discounts to families such as mine. I hope that explains my situation, so you can understand how difficult life is for people like me. My little Johny, he's 9, his father is in prison, loves to chat to your staff at Harecastle Tunnel. A lot of people don't like my little Johny, they say he terrorises the neighbourhood. I think that's so unfair. OK, he's smashed a few car windows over the past few months but that's only when he's bored. And what kid wouldn't be bored during lockdown? Anyway, it's not his fault. I blame the government. I mean, what kind of government sends the father of a young lad to prison? Do they not care about families? I think it's disgusting. Anyway, if your kind people at Harecastle Tunnel are sacked Johny will have no one to talk to. I'm sure that CRT, as a respected organisation, wouldn't want to be responsible for sending my little Johny over the edge into having mental health issues. Yours Dear Mr/Mrs/Miss/Doctor/etc. Ricco
Sad that you are thinking life is going to get tougher but you are missing the nearer collapse of the kebab economy. We are currently all concentrating on how to solve this as the wellbeing of having a kebab and sitting watching the world go by by the water edge is known to improve your health, especially on a Bank Holiday. We are currently assessing this report www.atvtoday.co.uk/158187-food/ and will update you soon.

Rog yes that amazes me and I suppose they are already being run by “volunteers,” well unpaid workers let’s call them what they are.

Rog I used a self service checkout for the first time last week. Was in Morrisons, and somehow I managed to jump a lengthy queue to the serviced tills. Was told off and for some reason sent to the self service area. Not having a clue i broke the system and ended up with a girl having to check the goods for me. She wasn’t happy 😃

Dear Boater Liaison Team Thank you so much for your reply. It doesn't really answer my question but it's so exciting to get mail that's not either asking for money or giving a date for a bailiff visit. I showed it to my little Johny. He can't read but when I told him it was about him he got so excited. He's forgotten about his mental health issues now and to celebrate he's going to wear the new Nike trainers I bought him yesterday and walk to the tunnel to speak to the kind men there. I've told him to be polite to them today and not to throw any stones at passing boats. I'm sure he'll behave well today, he's a little love really, people just misunderstand him. Yours

I think it would be a good idea if we all use our ingenuity and compose letters/emails to CRT on this issue... Folk who know long words could use long words.... See which composition gets a response and then we will know how to word future letters of concern.... I do like writing 'letters of concern'..atm I am involved in exchange of views with a bank.....would like to say its not going my way....I have not yet found the right words...however I won't give up yet.
Whats the email address?... I'll have a go

Paul stopped his CRT vollying in Brum last year because he was being asked to do jobs which paid employees had previously done.He always said he was an extra pair of hands, not a replacement pair. The straw which broke the camel's back, was when he returned to the CRT building for his lunch & there was a load of litter just outside. As he did a lot of litter picking,he'd have automatically picked it up.There were however, two full time employees standing right next to the rubbish chatting. One turned to Paul & told(not asked) him to pick it up.Paul's reply was that he'd pick it up as he can't stand to see litter, but that they as paid employees could have done it instead of standing gossiping. That was it,he didn't go back.

Thank you to 'your' Paul and all the other volunteers who do a great service ... I have no issue with volunteers.
We've just walked up to Woodend lock and back in the rain, and the volunteers are still there ... soaked yet setting the locks for approaching boats.
But it was said by C&RT (I seem to recall) that volunteers would complement their paid staff not replace them.
I'm sure the Harecastle tunnel issue must be mistaken ... how can they operate the tunnel (gates, fans, barrier etc) with volunteers who may or may not turn up on any given day ?
I eagerly await a reply from Mr Parry or his minions.

richard.parry@canalrivertrust.org.uk It can't do any harm to bombard Mr Parry with e mails of concern patty or indeed anyone else interested. A simple message, stated clearly is all it needs, whatever your view. Rog

Sorry we didn't answer your question. Would you mind filling in a customer satisfaction form for us, it will only take a few minutes (well maybe 30 if you answer the questions incorrectly).
Thanks and many regards.

I have had a reply already from Ms Sharman (as Mr Parry is on holiday).
It very long windedly seeks to reassure me that experienced volunteers are being sought to supplement their seasonal paid tunnel staff.
It was made clear that replacing tunnel staff with volunteers has not happened.
I have sent a follow up enquiry inviting a simple answer to the question "Are there plans to replace paid tunnel staff with volunteers?"

That's about the state of things these days, isn't it? Even the Daily Mail asks if I will take part in a survey! Are they serious?
