Whilst this is undoubtedly true, I use this method only for very temporary mooring, never had it slip. I guess I must be very lucky Also very quick to tie. But what is it? Overhand knot? Two half-hitches on-the-bight? But its not on the bight its on the standing part. Personally Two half-hitches in-the-bight seems a better description

How to make something thatβs fairly simple, overly complicated.

Only if one is backwards. Otherwise it wouldn't be a round turn and two half hitches would it.

Anyway if Tony C doesn't mind being a bit sloppy like Loddon (and me, and I suspect quite a few others) then the trucker's hitch or that other similar one Magnetman mentioned seems the way to go - better than having a dolly welded to the roof. But its just about not letting the boat float off for a minute or two. You could use an anchor if the ground is soft (just saying). I once used the trucker's hitch as a temporary kicking-strap in an emergency. No-one else knew how to tie it. How smug was I.

Yes, you're probably correct ... And there's something called 'perfected whipping' but it isn't what you think it is
